Add to ShortlistDays 1-2 Wellington/Tongariro National Park
Arrive in Wellington early and spend a day discovering this capital of New Zealand's North Island. Explore Te Papa Tongarewa, the Museum of New Zealand, and perhaps ride a cable car to the Botanic Gardens, taking in spectacular views of the city and harbour. Travel to World Heritage listed Tongariro National Park. The three mountains at the heart of the park, Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu, have cultural and religious significance for the Maori people.
Days 3-4 Rotorua
A geothermal wonderland, Rotorua never fails to excite. Gaze at bubbling mud pools and gushing geysers, or visit a Maori village. At night, enjoy a relaxing dinner at one of 'Sulphur City's' restaurants. The following day, choose from a number of activities including visiting active volcanoes, going rafting on the Kaituna River or learning wood carving techniques from the locals.
Days 5-6 Paihia/Bay of Islands
Head past Auckland, travelling to the seaside town of Paihia in the beautiful Bay of Islands. Home to 144 islands, secluded bays and an abundance of marine life, this region has plenty to offer. Why not go for a hike, visit New Zealand's oldest settlement or swim with dolphins.
Day 7 Hokianga Harbour
View Tane Mahuta, the towering Kauri tree in the majestic Waipoua Kauri Forest Reserve and take a walk to the Four Sisters. Soak up the sights and sounds of the idyllic Hokianga Harbour at your own pace and enjoy a unique twilight encounter in the Waipoua Forest.
Day 8 Auckland
Visit the Kauri Museum in Matakohe which tells a fascinating history of the far north region. View Tane Mahuta, the towering Kauri tree in the majestic Waipoua Kauri Forest Reserve and take a walk to the Four Sisters. Travel to Auckland, New Zealand's largest city, where the Northern Spirit trip comes to an end. If time permits, take the time to walk through the streets of this quirky city, perhaps exploring one of the many art galleries or parks.
