Days 1-2 Ulaanbaatar

Arrive in Mongolia’s bubbling capital, a great place to begin this overland adventure. Visit Ulaanbaatar’s many museums and learn about the most famous Mongolian - Genghis Khan.

Day 3 Ogii Lake

Leave UB and watch as the city's gritty cityscape gradually fades and the sparse, rolling hillsides for which the country is so well known take over. Check out the crumbling ruins of Khar Bukh Balgas and learn about the various kingdoms that ruled from here during the Kitan period. Scan the waters and skies of Ogii Lake for such birdlife as Swan Geese, White Spoonbills and Dalmatian Pelicans.

Day 4 Karakorum

Visit Karakorum, Mongolia’s ancient capital. Wander the ruins of the old city and drop in on Mongolia’s first Buddhist monastery.

Days 5-6 Orkhon Valley

Spend time in stunning Orkhon Valley and visit nearby waterfalls. Hike to the 17th-century Tuvkhon Monastery for a spectacular view of this verdant valley.

Days 7-8 Tsenkher Hot Springs

Cross the Khangai Nuruu Mountains and be greeted by lush grasses and open valleys. Visit a nomadic family or bathe in the sensual hot springs.

Day 9 Tamir River

Peruse the various goods and produce being hawked at Tsetserleg's local market. Visit a provincial museum housed in an ancient monastery from where the head monk used to govern. Spend a night camped in a picturesque spot along the Tamir River.

Day 10 Chuluut Canyon

Hear the local mythology surrounding the giant rock of Taikhar Chuluu. Set off across Arkhangai Province, soaking up spectacular panoramas of vast green meadows, gently flowing rivers and rolling hills. Take in the dramatic views over Chuluut Canyon before setting up camp for another night.

Day 11 Khorgo Volcano

Hike to the summit of Khorgo Volcano and savour astonishing views down into its deep crater and across its barren lava fields. Stop by Yellow Dog Cave en route to a night spent in a traditional ger camp.

Day 12 Zuun Lake

Entering the Mongolian highlands, get a taste of the country's more dramatic landscapes along one of its most mesmerising routes. The day's travel concludes upon arrival at Zuun Lake.

Day 13 Murun

Continue the journey through the rugged mountain terrain of Khuvsgul province. Become immersed in the intriguing museums, markets and monasteries of Murun.

Days 14-15 Lake Khovsgol

Potter about an ancient burial site famous for the deer motifs emblazoning the memorial stones of past leaders and warriors. Arrive at Lake Khovsgol and meet some of the nomadic ethnic groups that roam this area – presuming we can track them down that is!

Day 16 Murun

Embark on a day's hiking through the lush meadows, thick pine forests and resplendent wildflowers of Lake Khovgol – dubbed 'The Blue Pearl'.

Days 17-18 Selenge River & Bulgan

Prepare for two days of driving across the central-northern steppes, savouring the endless vistas over vast empty landscapes.

Day 19 Amarbayasgalant Monastery

Visit the Amarbayasgalant Monastery – one of the few Buddhist monastic centres to have survived the Stalinist purges of the 1930s. Admire the Tibetan-influenced architecture of the temples and perhaps meet some of the monks studying there.

Days 20-21 Ulaanbaatar
