Relish the mellow vibe of Kuching before heading out into the wilds of Sarawak.
Hike along pristine jungle trails in the Bako National Park. Look to the trees to try and spot the quirky proboscis monkeys who call the park home. If weather permits, embark on a night walk with one of the park rangers.
After an invigorating morning hike, farewell the jungle and travel to Semenggoh Orangutan Sanctuary. Then, once back in Kuching, perhaps mosey down to the riverbank and watch tambang ferries glide by or visit Sarawak Museum, one of the most popular attractions here.
Be welcomed in the longhouses of the Iban people and spend an evening learning about their fascinating culture. Visit nearby caves on a guided jungle walk in Niah National Park, gain insights into the locals’ day-to-day life and hear tales of their headhunting history.
Explore the jungles and caves of Mulu National Park. See the bats emerge from Deer Cave at sunset, and head underground in Wind Cave and Clearwater Cave - home to Asia’s longest underground river. Then, travel downriver by longboat and hike out to a jungle camp where we'll sleep on raised open-air platforms among the verdant surrounds.
Embark on a jungle trek along a section of the ominously named Headhunters’ Trail, historically used by warring parties in the region. Take to the river in a longboat before transferring to Limbang for the night.
Make the final leg of the journey to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah's attractive seaside capital. End this unforgettable small group adventure basking on sunny shores and snacking away on lip-smacking Malay delicacies.
Learn about the spiritual, economic and social ties that locals have with Mt Kinabalu on a village homestay. Spend a night in traditional accommodation, which is nestled in the shadow of this imposing mountain.
Head into the unspoilt wilderness of the World Heritage-listed Kinabalu National Park. Then, fuelled by fresh air and stunning views, set off on an energetic hike up Mt Kinabalu. Conquer the sometimes challenging ascent, stopping to admire a diverse range of flora and fauna species along the way. Settle in for the night at a local resthouse.
Wake early to complete the final ascent up Mt Kinabalu and take in a breathtaking panorama of jungles in one direction and the South China Sea in the other. Enjoy a well-deserved soak in the Japanese-style Poring Hot Springs - believed to have healing properties for the skin. While here, perhaps get a new perspective of the jungle on a tree canopy walk, visit a nearby butterfly farm or trek to Laganan Falls.
Travel into the steamy Kinabatangan Rainforest. Learn how locals contribute to the region’s conservation at MESCOT, an Intrepid Foundation-supported project that provides villagers with environmental education. Explore the jungle by boat and try to spot curious wildlife cavorting through the trees. At night, listen for the nocturnal calls of wild orangutans, hornbills and macaques.
Embark on an early morning wildlife cruise on the Kinabatangan River. Then make tracks to the busy city of Sandakan, home to historic Chinese temples and an island-studded bay.
Pass by small villages and bamboo fish traps on a speedboat ride to Turtle Island. After spending quality time relaxing on the beach, be touched by the sight of giant green turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs under the moonlight.
The soulful eyes of Borneo's famous creatures will melt hearts on a visit to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Learn about conservation on an optional tour of the Rainforest Discovery Centre or check out the cheeky proboscis monkeys at a sanctuary in Labuk Bay.
Transfer to Sandakan airport and fly to Kota Kinabalu. We stay in a centrally located hotel in Kota Kinabalu. The rest of the afternoon is free for your own activities. Do some last minute shopping at the large shopping Centers or take a wonder down to the night market to pick up something local.
