Libya FAQ

Do I need a visa to travel to Libya?

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveller. The visa requirements for your trip vary depending on where you are from and where you are going. As a general rule most countries expect that you will have at least 6 months' validity on your passport. On arrival visitors may be asked to present return tickets and evidence of means to cover your intended stay.

We keep the following information up to date as much as possible, but rules do change - it's important that you check for yourself. Residents from other countries must consult the relevant embassies or your travel agent.

  • Nationals of Asian, African (except South Africa) and Middle Eastern countries and Switzerland cannot obtain a visa for Libya.

Libya uses what it terms a visa-on-arrival system. However, you must be in possession of a visa authority approving your visa prior to your arrival in Libya.

    Step 1.
A certified Arabic translation of your passport details must be imprinted in the passport. In the UK the following translation agency will assist you. Please contact the translator regarding delivery of passport and payment before sending your passport.

    Step 2.
Once you have the Arabic translation in your passport, you must send us your completed form with a good quality emailed scan of:

    1. The translated page with certification stamp.
    2. The photo page of your passport

The scan should be at same size clearly showing your photo and not less than 100dpi. We cannot accept faxed copies. We do not need your passport.

    Step 3
We must receive the scans at least four weeks prior to tour start date, but you may send them at any time before that if you wish.

    Step 4
The visa authority will be issued approximately 3-4 days before tour start date. We will email the authority to you, which specifies your date of entry, and you must print it out to show at airline check-in and also to passport control on arrival.

If you are arriving by land from Egypt the same procedure applies however your visa will be issued upon arrival at the land border with Egypt with the group. Our Libyan representative who will assist us with this process will meet us at the border.

    NOTE 1
You must have at least one clear page in your passport (preferably two) on arrival in Libya for the Libyan visa exit/entry stamps and passport registration.

    NOTE 2
Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your date of departure from Libya. There must be no indication in your passport of a visit to Israel. This includes not only Israeli entry or exit stamps but also any Egyptian or Jordanian entry or exit stamps at their road borders with Israel. There is no problem if you arrived and departed Egypt or Jordan by air or by any other land border except Israel.

    NOTE 3
Please note that independent travel is not permitted in Libya, so transfers and accommodation must be booked and paid for for any pre-tour arrivals or post-tour departures. (Arrival transfers are included in the trip price).

    NOTE 4
A tourist visa will not be issued to anyone holding a passport or Arabic translation listing occupation in the media (e.g. journalist).

Please provide your scanned copy of your passport at least 30 days prior to the trip departure. You need to email both of these to middleeastops@intrepidtravel.com and sales@intrepidtravel.com.

Please note that it won't be possible to enter Libya with Israeli stamps in your passport or any other evidence of having visited Israel such as departure stamps from Jordan/Egypt from borders with Israel.

IMPORTANT: As of Feb 2010 Libya no longer issues visas to citizens of Switzerland.
