Days 1-2 Tokyo

Arrive in a futuristic city set against a backdrop of centuries of tradition. Explore Tokyo’s main sights and sounds, from the spectacular Imperial Palace in the city centre and tiered pagodas to shopping malls, sushi bars and spotless streets.

Days 3-4 Hakone

Leave the city craziness behind with a train-ride to Hakone. Take advantage of the area’s hot springs and enjoy incredible views of Mount Fuji as this iconic mountain takes over the skyline. Spend the next day exploring the area, including a cable car ride, a boat cruise across Lake Ashi and a visit to the volcanic valley of Owakudani. Finally, take the train to charming Tsumago. Step back in time with a night in a Japanese-style inn and a traditional home-cooked meal.

Days 5-6 Hiroshima

Enjoy a breath of fresh air on a series of forest walks through the beautiful mountain scenery, passing picture-perfect traditional villages along the way. Swap the laid-back atmosphere for a high speed bullet train through the countryside to Hiroshima, a city reborn after being devastated by the first atomic bomb. Visit the Peace Memorial Park, explore its museum and see one of the few buildings still standing - the A-Bomb Dome - to understand the impact that the blast had on the community.

Days 7-8 Mt Koya

Visit the centre of Shingon Buddhism and experience a traditional morning prayer ceremony. Spend a night in a temple and enjoy a typical vegetarian dinner for an incredible insight into the mysterious life of a monk. Take in the beauty of the surrounding hills as well as the myriad of local temples on foot before moving on to Kyoto.

Days 9-11 Kyoto

Spend an absorbing day soaking up Kyoto’s charming mix of past and present. Once Japan’s capital, the pretty city is a cultural treasure-trove of temples and gardens and a lovely place to enjoy both on foot and by bike. Join a cooking lesson for a fitting finale to an enchanting family holiday; one that has been a total feast for the senses.
