Japan Family - Essence of the Orient Summary

Add to Shortlist

Days 1-2 Tokyo

The dynamic capital of an ancient land, Tokyo blends neon-drenched modernity with traditional temples, shrines and gardens.

Days 3-4 Hakone

The picturesque lakeside region of Hakone is a wonderland of stunning mountain panoramas and relaxing outdoor onsen (hot spring baths).

Day 5-6 Hiroshima

Enjoy a breath of fresh air on a series of forest walks through the beautiful mountain scenery, passing picture-perfect traditional villages along the way. Swap the laid-back atmosphere for a high speed bullet train through the countryside to Hiroshima, a city reborn after being devastated by the first atomic bomb. Visit the Peace Memorial Park, explore its museum and see one of the few buildings still standing - the A-Bomb Dome - to understand the impact that the blast had on the community.

Day 7-8 Mt Koya

Visit the centre of Shingon Buddhism and experience a traditional morning prayer ceremony. Spend a night in a temple and enjoy a typical vegetarian dinner for an incredible insight into the mysterious life of a monk. Take in the beauty of the surrounding hills as well as the myriad of local temples on foot before moving on to Kyoto.

Days 9-11 Kyoto

Magnificent temples, stunning gardens and gorgeous geishas abound in Kyoto, the ancient heart of Japan's unique culture.
