Day 1 Arrive Garfagnana Valley

Days 2-7 Day walks from Garfagnana Valley
Discover one of Tuscany's best kept secrets on a series of day walks from a lodge base nestled serenely among this mountain wilderness. Forget rolling Tuscan plains, Garfagnana Valley offers bewitching wooded forests, towering mountain peaks, unsurpassed alpine views and is a world away from Italy's tourists. Traipse through the forests of the lower Apennines to the medieval town of Castiglione di Garfagnana for wonderful views over the mountains and valley below - be sure to spend some time exploring its impressive walled fortress. Discover the animals and woodlands of the Orecchiella Natural Park and take an exhilarating walk up to high plain of Pania di Corino, where eagles, deer, hawks and wolves all make their home. This walk rewards with stunning views over the Serchio Valley and Apuane Alps. Journey up to the Apennine Ridge that overlooks the village of Casone. There's a chance to greet shepherds tending their pastures at Bocca di Massa, which is dotted with shelters, churches, hermitages and churches. Walk through dense forests and feel the exhilaration of making it to the summit of Monte Sumbra, with the reward of with staggering views over the valley. It won't take long to discover that this area of Italy is unsurpassed for its walking trails, picturesque villages and delicious local cuisine. It is also the perfect place to gently absorb a different side of Tuscany and escape from the city tourist crowds.
