Highlights of Italy Summary
Add to ShortlistDays 1-2 Venice
Arrive in Venice, Italy, arguably the most romantic and unique holiday destination in Europe. Learn why this city is believed to be the best place to get lost in by zigzagging through a seemingly endless tangle of alleyways, bridges and canals. Sip coffee in the Piazza San Marco, visit a glass workshop or head to the Bridge of Sighs – said to be named in reference to 16th-century prisoners who enjoyed their last moments of freedom while crossing from cells to the executioner. Indulge in local delicacies such as tiramisu and sparkling prosecco or, for the quintessential Venice experience, cruise around the canals in a vaporetto.
Days 3-4 Cinque Terre
Travel to the Cinque Terre and be revitalised by the fresh sea breeze that drifts in off the Mediterranean. Take in glorious vistas while walking the coastal path, journeying past citrus orchards scattered over steep hillsides overlooking the sea. Explore rustic Italian villages, cool off in the warm coastal waters and be sure to make the most of the fresh local produce.
Days 5-6 Florence
Be captivated by the culture-rich atmosphere of Florence, from family-run vineyards on the outskirts of the city to the Duomo’s magnificent marble facade. View wonders of art in the Medici Chapels and the Uffizi Gallery, see the world’s most famous David in the Galleria dell'Accademia and climb uphill to Piazzale Michelangelo to enjoy a golden sunset across the city's rooftops. In free time, perhaps venture to Pisa, Lucca or Siena on a day trip.
Days 7-8 Rome
Grab a gelato and take to the hectic streets of Rome. Visit the Colosseum, recharge with a slice of pizza and a strong espresso at the Piazza Navona or throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain and make a wish to return to the 'Eternal City'. Before the tour comes to an end, art-lovers should visit the Sistine Chapel to admire the timeless work of Michelangelo, while history buffs will enjoy a jaunt through the ancient halls of the Pantheon.
