Arrive in Mysore and head for the ruins of Srirangapatnam, a former capital that was destroyed by the British during their final battle to secure control of southern India. Cycle back to Mysore and enjoy a fresh lunch before spending the afternoon cycling up Chaumundi Hill to view the huge five-metre rock carving of Nandi.
Cruise the quiet back roads of rural India and cycle past herds of white oxen and women in colourful saris carrying water pots on their heads.
Saddle up once more, this time to ride into Mudumalai National Park, home to a rich and diverse animal population including wild elephants, monkeys and some Gaur (Indian bison). Cross into the fertile Tamil Nadu region and spend a free afternoon exploring ‘Wild Haven’ – a rustic planter's bungalow with superb views of the Nilgiri Mountains and the surrounding jungle.
Make the ascent up the 36 hairpin bends to the historic Ooty Hill Station, the former summer capital of the Raj. After conquering the climb, take in the superb vistas and appreciate the cooler climes. While here, be sure to sample a steaming pot of the region’s cardamom tea.
Cycle down to the beach to spot colourful fishing boats bobbing in the water before heading along country roads to Guruvayoor. Along the way, stop for photos of colourful landscapes, watch locals going about their business and see the significant elephant population at the Sree Krishna Temple. In the evening, delight in the nightly spectacle of pooja.
Back on two wheels, make tracks for the coast, travelling down narrow roads lined with fruit trees. After a refreshing swim, continue to a ferry port and island-hop across to Fort Kochi. Explore this culture-filled, historic town and stay in a former residency of the Raj.
Appreciate the contrast between ancient Portuguese villas and humble fishing huts en route to Alleppey. Then, head out on an unforgettable exploration of the Kerala Backwaters aboard a traditional houseboat.
After enjoying breakfast on the boat, enjoy a dramatic cliff-top circuit on the journey to Varkala. While here, chill out on the beach, wander about in the shops or enjoy the atmosphere of beachside restaurants.
