Style
Original, Comfort
  • Original trips are classic Intrepid adventures. With a mix of included activities and free time, they offer plenty of opportunities to explore at your own pace and take part in activities that really get beneath the skin of a destination. While the occasional meal may be included, you'll have the freedom to seek out your own culinary adventures. Accommodation is generally budget or tourist class (2-3 star), but you're as likely to find yourself as a guest of a local family as staying in a hotel or camping. Transport will vary as well. Depending on the destination and the itinerary you could find yourself travelling on anything from a camel to a train or a private safari vehicle. It's all part of the adventure! Original travellers have a desire to make the most of their travel time and really get to know a place, its people and cultures.
  • Comfort is your style of travel if you want the whole grassroots experience with more inclusions, meals and creature comforts. While accommodation is predominantly tourist class (3-4 star), on some itineraries there is the opportunity to stay with a local family, spend the night on a train or camp out in exotic places (without putting up your own tent of course). Along the way, you'll really experience the destination up close. You'll mingle with locals, enjoy a taste of their way of life and gain special insights from your leader. This is not luxury travel, but real world experiences - just with a softer landing!

Bite-size Break Delhi
Itinerary
Day 1 Delhi
Namaste! Welcome to India.
Our Bite-size Breaks are the ideal add-on to a longer adventure - or simply a mini adventure in an amazing destination. This trip will see you immerse yourself in a culinary hot spot and with the help of a local leader you will get to search out bustling markets, local produce, street food (eat the way the locals do!) and head to the home of a local host for a traditional, hands-on cooking experience.
Please note Bite-size Breaks are slightly different to our group tours, with the idea being that you maintain a level of independence during down-time eg at night or between scheduled activities. You'll most likely travel on a join-in-basis, which means you may or may not be joined by others for activities and transportation.
Your Bite-sized Break starts today with pick up from your hotel at 4pm.
Travel by cycle rickshaw and take the busy Delhi metro to start our home cooked Delhi experience. A short journey and walk away we will be welcomed into the home of our local friends.
As dinner is being prepared our local guide will provide information on the lifestyles of Indians, the traditions of home life, the importance of family in Indian culture, arranged marriages - and of course, the food! Dine on a traditional Indian home-cooked meal which will be predominantly vegetarian and sure to tantalize our taste buds like no other.
Our hosts and local guide will be more than happy to provide as much information as we desire on the dishes provided, their ingredients and how best to eat them. We can choose to do it Indian style and eat we our hands, utensils are available if we want. At the end of the meal we will have an opportunity to enjoy same marsala chai. As alcohol is not part of everyday life of an Indian family, it will not be served with the meal.
After saying thank you and goodbye to our hosts, our local guide will assist with getting a taxi back to your hotel.

Day 2 Delhi
Meet your local guide at the hotel at 9am today for another metro ride, this time to the oldest parts of Delhi. There's a chance to kick start the day with a cup of chai before diving into the sights, sounds and smells of Old Delhi.
Today we will experience the best of Delhi has to offer with great street food , markets, bazaars, temples and famous historical sites along the way. There is plenty of opportunity to stop and sample a samosa or other snacks from street stalls. Goods on offer range from wedding paraphernalia to cow dung on a string! We will walk through narrow alleyways to see what local life has in store for us today.
Stops include significant historical sights linked to the 1857 Mutiny (also known as India's First War of Independence) which was ruthless put down by British colonial forces and was a precursor to a later more peaceful struggle for independence led by Mahatma Gandhi in the early 1900's. Our local guide will also provide us with a background into India's more recent history and struggle for independence.
We will visit local temples dedicated to the various Hindu gods where our local guide will give us an insight into the religion of Hinduism, one of the more spiritual moments on our Delhi day tour.
You may choose to spend some more time in Chandi Chowk for personal exploration or alternatively your local guide can assist with arranging a taxi back to your hotel where we will meet again at 4pm for our Delhi Food Walk.
This delicious Delhi food tour begins with a bit of local culture. Hop on a cycle rickshaw, one of the most colourful methods of transportation in Delhi, and pass through the city’s picturesque colleges and universities, stopping at an ancient Hanuman temple.
After visiting the temple, we head out to our first food stop and witness how fresh local shawarma (kebab) is made. From here, we’ll continue on to an iconic neighbourhood eatery thatis popular with everyone, including students from nearby colleges. Here, you can enjoy a local favourite – fresh fruit beer – as well as momos (dumplings) and banta, a delicious lemon-based drink that’s an ideal refreshment for hot Delhi weather.
We then continue through the Kamla Market and emerge into a narrow alley full of delectable street-food joints. This lane is a great spot for photographers and food lovers alike, and here’s where we’ll sample several local delicacies like paneertikka, golgappas, bhelpuri, paavbhaji, and chuski. Yum!
After sampling nearly everything we possibly can, walk it off through some beautiful nearby markets, admiring everything including the work of a local henna painter. We’ll sample some crispy potatoes and stop for the best homemade ice cream in Delhi, kulfi-falooda. A little more walking through the bustling, fascinating streets of Delhi will lead us to our final stop – a sweet shop, where we’ll have the opportunity to try some fresh samosa, rabdi, gulab jamun, and sweet flavoured milk.
This delectable Delhi food tour will leave you very satisfied and an aficionado of Delhi’s best local food, which you’ll be craving long after you leave this enigmatic city.

    Culture shock rating

Expect some culture shock. You'll be exposed to signs of poverty and access to services may be sporadic. The food will be quite different to home and English speakers harder to find. Respecting the local culture will make it easier to fit in and really experience the location.
    Physical rating

Some easy physical activities included in your trip. No physical preparation is required to make the most of the journey.
    Group size
Maximum of 12 travellers per group.
    Your fellow travellers
As you travel on a group trip you will be exposed to all the pleasures and maybe some of the frustrations of travelling in a group. Your fellow travellers will probably come from all corners of the world and likely a range of age groups too. We ask you to be understanding of the various needs and preferences of your group - patience with your fellow travellers is sometimes required for the benefit of everyone's travel experience. Remember too that you have responsibilities to the group. If you are requested to be at a place at a certain time, ensure that you don't keep the rest of the group waiting. We have found time and time again that the very best trips we operate are those where the dynamics within the group work well - this takes just a little effort on your part.
Due to privacy reasons we are unable to provide you with contact details and any personal information about your fellow travellers booked on your trip prior to departure. However you can download Intrepid's FREE Meet Up app to chat with your fellow travellers before your trip. Meet up, discuss your upcoming trip and share the excitement of planning for your adventure. For more information visit: www.intrepidtravel.com/meetup
Please note many of our Short Break Adventures operate with a minimum of 1 person, so there may be instances where you are the only person on the trip.
