Walk through one of America’s most beautiful regions, hiking the highlights of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine
Hugging the continent’s rugged, spectacular north-eastern coast, New England calls to those who want to get close to America’s natural wonders. Pack the hiking shoes and a sense of adventure for a walk through sweeping forests and up soaring peaks. From Boston, travel through the ‘The Green Mountain State’ of Vermont, stocking up on tasty local produce on the way. Walk atop Presidents in New Hampshire’s White Mountain National Forest, then skirt the windy peninsulas and craggy shores of Maine’s Mid-Coast to unique Acadia National Park. A New England autumn offers one of the country’s most incredible natural sights: the changing colours of the trees sweeps northward, bringing blazing oranges, reds and yellow to create a awe-inspiring fiery landscape. The focus of this trip is hiking. We tackle some of the more famous and spectacular hikes in these areas, but you must consider your physical ability for some of them. You'll get more out of the trip if you are fit and able to undertake some challenging hikes. There are always easier options if you don't feel able to do the hikes, but be aware that you will be on your own if doing a different hike to the rest of the group.
Many people like to visit the New England area to see the fall foliage. You need to be aware that the timing of the fall colours can depend on the weather, and it happens at a slightly different time every year. For help planning your trip around this, see http://discovernewengland.org/fall-foliage-maps for historic data and links to forecast maps.
This part of the country can experience extremes of weather. Summer can be very hot and humid on the east coast of the USA, whereas shoulder seasons can be chilly. Wet and windy weather can happen at any time, especially when hiking in mountains. Bring layers regardless of the season.
Traffic in and out of Boston can be busy. Be prepared for delays, especially on the drive back in to Boston at the end of the trip. This will be quite a long travel day, but the rugged New England scenery is a great distraction.
