Challenge your mind, body and soul while hiking the Kokoda Trail in New Guinea.
Surrounded by dense greenery, glistening rivers and incredible views, it is hard to believe that just over 70 years ago the 96 km Kokoda Trail was the site of one of the bloodiest battles for Australian troops in World War II. Even nowadays, to conquer the trail requires dedication, courage and mateship, just like it did back in the 1940s. Begin the adventure in Port Moresby before visiting the Kokoda Memorial and undertaking seven days of steamy trekking through the dense Papua New Guinea heat. Meet friendly locals along the way, test your personal stamina and undertake a journey as challenging mentally as it is physically.
TRIP CHANGES FOR 2017:
From 2017 all departures will include a commercial flight from Port Moresby to Popondetta followed by land transport to Kokoda to begin the trek. All departures will trek in the same direction (from Kokoda to Owers Corner).
Trek the famous Kokoda Track with a local cooperative that ensures local villages and communities benefit directly
Follow in the footsteps of the Australian and allied soldiers who battled to defend Port Moresby from advancing Japanese forces in 1942. Hear incredible tales of courage and personal sacrifice from the local historian who accompanies you on the trek
Meet friendly locals and stay in remote villages
Hike up the arid spines of mountains and through valleys of lush rainforest. This challenging, rewarding adventure invites you to confront your own physical and mental boundaries in the middle of the jungle
Get to know your personal porter, who will look out for you every step of the way
Our Intrepid Kokoda trip includes a personal porter for each person on our trip, and one food porter per two Intrepid travellers. This not only ensures that you have the best experience possible, but we are also supporting employment in PNG.
Due to the strenuous nature of the trek, the minimum age for this trip is 18 years old. Bookings for minors, even if accompanied by a parent, cannot be accepted.
You will be required to complete a Passenger Self-Assessment form for this trip. Please complete this and send to Intrepid or your travel agent once you have booked your trip.
You will also need to conduct your own physical training program so that you are fully prepared and fit enough to tackle this trek. The physical challenges of the Kokoda Track are immense. Expect long, demanding days of hiking through steep, sometimes slippery terrain, often to points of high altitude and under a hot sun.
The accommodation whilst on the trek is basic and multi share, often in communal village huts. Please note that you will be sharing a mixed gender sleeping space.
Travellers don’t come to Kokoda for a holiday. They come to challenge their body and spirit, and to pay their respects to the brave men and women who gave their lives on this merciless route during times of war. To travel to Kokoda is to understand that, no matter how deep the jungle, or how steep the trail, courage and mateship will always prevail. Although Australians hear the call of Kokoda the loudest, the friendly smiles of passing locals, the promise of new friends and the challenge of the trek make the Kokoda Track a once-in-a lifetime experience for anyone who is up for the challenge.

On most of the days we finished hiking by 12pm so it was a little boring sitting around with nothing to do and nowhere to go until it was dark enough to go to sleep.
