Why we love this trip

  • Marvel at mother nature as you weave through the great Avenue of Volcanoes in the Ecuadorian Sierra

  • Gaze out across the pristine lake at the base of the Quilotoa Crater

  • Relax in comfort at a lodge surrounded by volcanic peaks

  • Ascend the world’s highest active volcano of Cotopaxi with a local guide, and wander around the magnificent lagoon of Limpiopungo. If conditions permit, you may even adventure as high as base camp

Is this trip right for you?

  • This Short Break Adventure is a ‘join in’ group departure, which means you are not accompanied by an Intrepid group leader – our local representative fills this role – and the configuration of any fellow travellers in the group might change during the trip.

  • This trip will run with a minimum of one person, so you may be joined by other travellers booked on the same date as you, or you may be on your own.

  • Due to the high altitude of areas covered on this trip, the sun is unusually strong and it’s easy to get burnt. Please wear sunscreen and other sun protection, and drink plenty of water.

  • At over 3,500 metres above sea level, the air is thinner here and it can take a bit of time to adjust to the high altitude. Some people aren’t affected at all, but if you are, be sure to drink plenty of water and not push yourself too hard. If possible, allow time to acclimatise to the increasing altitude by booking into a hotel a couple of days prior to the trip. Please see the ‘Health’ section of the trip notes for more information about altitude sickness.

  • It can get extremely cold on the volcanoes so be sure to bring a warm jacket and base layers.

This itinerary is valid for departures from 01 January 2016 to 31 December 2016. View the itinerary for departures between 01 January 2017 - 31 December 2017

Your adventure begins with a pick-up at 8 am from the hotel of your choice. Travel by private minivan through the Avenue of Volcanoes with your guide. If the trip starts on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday or Sunday, you may have the opportunity to visit a local indigenous market. Afterwards, continue towards the Quilotoa Crater. This is where the Tigua community live, famous for their colourful paintings on sheepskin canvases. Take a walk to the base of the crater and admire the turquoise lake below.

Tonight stay at a lodge near Cotopaxi Volcano. The high altitude of the accommodation should help you to acclimatise before tomorrow’s hike.

Note: Please contact us if you require assistance arranging accommodation in Quito. If you book your own accommodation, please ensure that your booking agent has been informed of your hotel address at least 15 days prior to the start of this trip.
