ARRIVING IN VENICE
Day 1 is arrival in Venice.
There are several ways to get to Venice. Flights from within Europe are relatively inexpensive and they land in Venice Marco Polo Airport, which is located only about 30 minutes by bus from Venice, or Venice Treviso Airport which is just over an hour by bus from Venice.
If arriving internationally, you can easily make your way from Rome airport to Venice.
See joining instructions for more information on how to arrive at our apartments. You MUST have your Intrepid voucher to collect the key so please remember to bring your voucher.
Travelling into Venice you will at Santa Lucia railway station or Piazzale Roma bus depot, from where you will have to walk approx. 30 minutes to the apartment across bridges and up and down steps. This is an inevitable part of life in a city without cars or taxis!
You can check in any time after 3:00pm on day 1 (Saturday). Please do not arrive earlier as the cleaners will still be preparing your apartment after the previous guests. If you are going to arrive at the apartments after 6:00pm on day 1, please ensure you advise Intrepid as we will have to make alternative arrangements for key delivery.
The apartments in Venice are a real treat. Staying on the island of Venice allows easy access to all the sights and a multitude of restaurants and bars- everything is just a leisurely stroll from your front door. This is also your chance to look behind building facades. Our apartments have 1 or 2 rooms with a shared bathroom. The kitchen is fully equipped so you may want to buy your own groceries to prepare meals - some of our guests make Italian feasts with local ingredients during their stay. There are local markets within easy walking distance.
Please note that our apartments are not hotels; there is no reception, room service or cleaning service every day, but plenty of charm and you just cannot beat the location. Linen (sheets, pillowcases, blankets, and two towels per person) are provided, however, the apartments will not be serviced during your stay. The apartments have no washing machines.
We have apartments suitable for 1 to 4 people (the price quoted is for the whole apartment and you and your party will be the only people staying in the apartment). They are in historic or character-filled buildings, so they do not have lifts - be prepared to carry your luggage and shopping up the stairs to the third floor.
Each apartment is located in the centre of Venice on the island. The area is traffic-free.
We recommend immediately after arrival that you head to the local tourist office to obtain a map and details of local attractions, locations of supermarkets and Internet cafes and the best restaurants.
WHILE YOU ARE IN VENICE
There are many options for sightseeing on your week in the Veneto- strolling alongside the canals of Venice, Island hopping in the Venetian lagoon, cruising on a gondola, seeing the fabled Romeo and Juliet town of Verona, visiting elegant villas, eating sumptuous Italy cuisine and doing it all from your own private apartment. There are several day trips that are possible from picturesque Medieval Towns of the Veneto to the Dolomites.
VENICE
While in Venice, set off on a walking tour - of course you will get lost but that is half the fun in this city. Piazza San Marco & Basilica di San Marco are a good place to start. Other famous sites include: the Venice Waterfront (St. Mark's Basin), Grand, Rialto Bridge and the Rialto Food Markets.
For art buffs, you must visit the Academia Museum. Top it all off with a tower climb to see the island in perspective.
VERONA (1.15 - 2 hours by local train)
This is city of the most famous lovers in history - Romeo and Juliet. Verona is the second largest city in Veneto - after Venice. Famous monuments include:
~ The 1st century Roman Amphitheatre, commonly known as The Arena was one of the biggest (and best preserved) theatres from the Roman Empire times with capacity for over 22000 people.
~ Juliet's Balcony is at the 'real' home of Juliet's family (the Capulets). The building dates from the 13th century.
LIDO (50 mins by local ferry)
Want to visit the beach?
Lido is an 18 km long sandbar with a population of around 20000 residents. The Adriatic side of the island is a series of long sandy beaches, of which some belongs to various hotels including the Des Bains, setting for Thomas Mann's classic novel Death in Venice. These beaches are mostly private although central, northern and southern ends of the island have public beaches.
MURANO (20 minutes by local ferry)
The island of Murano is about 1.5 kms north of Venice and is famous for its glass making. here you can see many factories making the exquisite Venetian glass for free. Of course it is difficult to leave without a purchase so we use the term 'free' lightly.
BURANO (1hr by local ferry)
Burano is an island in the Venetian Lagoon and is known for its lacework and for its charming brightly-painted historic houses. It is also renowned as one of the best places to find great fresh seafood restaurants.
The week is all yours to choose what to do and when to do it. Be sure to prepare in advance so that you can enjoy the most of Venice. Remember there is no group leader or representative to contact for advice while you are in Venice.
DEPARTING VENICE
Day 8 is departure day. After your booking is confirmed we will provide you with details on what to do with the key. Please be sure to vacate the apartment before 10:00am as our cleaners will be arriving to prepare the apartment for our next guests arriving at 3:00pm.
The itinerary attached is correct at time of printing. Please note: occasionally our itineraries are updated during the year to incorporate improvements stemming from past travelers' comments and our own research. Our brochure is usually released in November each year. As such the information given in this itinerary may be slightly different to that in the brochure. It is VERY IMPORTANT that you print and review a final copy of your Trip Notes a couple of days prior to travel, in case there have been changes that affect your plans. This is the least confronting of Intrepid's product range. You have the ease of 'Western-style' accommodation and the support of local English speaking guides when sightseeing is included.
These trips are a relaxing break. You don't have to worry about being able to do anything physically demanding unless you want to.

Every traveler is different and therefore spending money requirements will vary. Some travelers may drink more than others while other travelers like to purchase more souvenirs than most. Please consider your own spending habits when it comes to allowing for drinks, shopping, participating in optional activities and tipping. Please also remember the following specific recommendations when planning your trip.
Booking museums and attractions in advance:
To avoid disappointment we have outlined (where applicable) some important information on some of the major museums and attractions in Europe. Some of our groups have experienced lines of up to 5 hours to visit some of the major sites, while some sights are so popular they are booked out completely months in advance, making it impossible for you or your leader to arrange a visit while you are on the trip. Please note that many museums and attractions in Europe are closed on Mondays or Tuesdays. We recommend you carefully consider which sites and museums you are going to want to visit and that you make your reservations in advance where possible. If applicable we have given you information in this itinerary which outlines which day of the trip is a suitable time to make your reservations, as well as any other information that may help with planning your visit.
Travelling in Europe:
Europe is a region which may be very different to anything you have experienced before. Expense, crowds, differing cultures can result in initial culture shock but should be seen as an exciting new challenge. During our time here we have come to love this region but we know that we should always expect to encounter some difficulties along the way. In some parts of Europe there are very different attitudes to time keeping and service. Buses and trains will sometimes be late, plumbing can sometimes be temperamental and waiters may not seem as keen to serve you as you may be used to. If you are able to travel with a lot of patience and a sense of humour, then we know that you - like all of us - will be captivated by every part of Europe.
Summer temperatures in southern Europe:
In the south of Europe, summer temperatures can reach approximately 40 degrees Celsius, which means that it can be quite uncomfortable for those not used to extreme heat. Our apartments do not have air conditioning.
Italy in August:
Please note that August in Italy is the preferred time for the locals to take their annual holidays. During this time many restaurants and shops are closed and services are more difficult to arrange. It is possible that any malfunctions that may occur at our chosen accommodation and this might be subject to some delay in being fixed due to the holiday period. A little patience goes a long way in Italy.
Internet in Italy:
New anti-terrorism laws in Italy prohibit the use of the internet without the presentation of official photo identification. Travellers should take their drivers' license or passport to internet cafes.
Communication:
Please be aware that there are no telephones in our apartments for you to make calls. There are many call shops in town and you can buy phone cards and use public phone if you need to.
There is no wireless or internet access in our apartments. However there are internet cafes.
You can buy a prepaid SIM and phone for your stay here if you plan on making or receiving phone calls. You can usually buy one for approx. EUR30 from phone shops around town.

The style of accommodation described is a guideline only. On rare occasions alternative arrangements may need to be arranged due to availability of apartments. A similar standard of accommodation will be used in these instances.
Please keep in mind that accommodation as shown in the itinerary is subject to availability at time of booking. The closest available alternative will be substituted if our first choice hotels are not available. Deductions or supplements may be applied to the trip price as a result.
While travelling with us you will experience the vast array of wonderful food available in the world. Generally, to give you the maximum flexibility in deciding where and what to eat, not all meals are included in the trip price. This also gives you more budgeting flexibility. Please check the 'meal inclusions' section below for details of meals included.

While no meals are included you do have the convenience of a fully functioning kitchen in your apartment. To minimise the expense of eating out all the time, there are local food markets and supermarkets where you can stock up on supplies.

There is no group leader on this trip. This is your own week of private rental in our apartments. There will not be any representative of Intrepid at your disposal while in Venice therefore we recommend you research the activities you plan to do or ensure you visit the Tourist Office on arrival to plan your time here.

Arriving by plane:
The closest airport to Venice is
Venice Marco Polo airport which is only 25 minutes by bus from Piazzale Roma in Venice.
From the airport you can catch the ATVO (blue) Bus. Look for the 'Venezia' sign before boarding. The stop is located between the arrivals and departures areas.
You're should buy a ticket from the public-transportation ticket counter in the arrivals terminal. Don't forget to vlidate your ticket in the stamping machine next to the bus stop. If the ticket booth is closed, you can buy a ticket directly from the driver. Tickets cost approx. EUR3.
If you prefer a taxi, prepare to pay EUR35-45 to the Piazzale Roma or EUR90-100 for a water taxi.
Arriving by train:
Venice can be reached by trains from all over Italy and Europe. The train station is called Venice Santa Lucia Station.

The apartment is located in the historic city centre of Venice and can only be reached on foot once you have arrived in Venice wither by bus, taxi or train.
It is also an easy walk of about 25 minutes. Make sure you arm yourself with a map before you arrive (even a Google map).
If you are arriving after 6:00pm on day 1 please let us know in advance as we will have to make alternative arrangements with the key.
You must show your Intrepid Voucher at that bar to get the key. Unfortunately if you do not have the voucher then we will be unable to provide the key for security reasons.
For security reasons the location of where to collect your keys and the exact address of your apartment will be provided to you at the time of booking and once full payment has been received. Our apartments are generally on the 2nd or 3rd floor of residential apartment buildings. There are no lifts therefore you should take note of our recommended luggage limit. The apartment has 2 rooms for up to 4 people so you will need to share a bathroom with other members of your private party. The apartments are reserved for you and your guests. We don't expect any problems (and nor should you!) but if for any reason you are unable to commence your group trip as scheduled, please contact your starting point hotel, requesting that you speak to or leave a message for your trip leader.
If you have pre-booked an airport transfer (where available) and have not made contact with our representative within 30 minutes of clearing customs and immigration, we recommend that you make your own way to the Starting Point hotel, following the Joining Instructions in the Trip Notes. Should this occur, please apply to your travel agent for a refund of the transfer cost on your return.
No refund is available on missed transfers or portions of your trip owing to a different flight arrival or delayed flight arrival. Any additional cost incurred in order to meet up with your group is at your own expense.

Each apartment is renovated with modern furniture. They are very clean and comfortable and a great place to spend a week.

Please also make sure you have access to an additional USD$400, to be used when unforeseen incidents or circumstances outside our control (eg. a natural disaster, civil unrest or an outbreak of bird flu) necessitate a change to our planned route.
Please note that visas are the responsibility of the individual traveler. The visa requirements for your trip vary depending on where you are from and where you are going. We keep the following information up to date as much as possible, but rules do change.
It is important that you check for yourself.
Europe:
Most western visitors do not require visas to visit Europe as a tourist, and are stamped in on arrival for 3 months. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months. On arrival visitors may be asked to present return tickets and evidence of means to cover your intended stay.
Our apartment does not have a washing machine for your use. There are several coin-operated self-service launderettes in town. Alternatively you may wish to handwash small items. There are local supermarkets for you to buy washing detergent when you arrive. There is no need to bring it from home. We recommend you use mild, bio-degradable laundry soap.
What you need to bring will vary according to the trip style you have chosen, the countries you are visiting and when you are travelling. Generally speaking you should pack as lightly as possible. On the vast majority of our trips you are expected to carry your own luggage and although you will not be required to walk long distances with your luggage (max 30 minutes) we recommend keeping the weight under 10kg/22lb.
Most travellers carry their luggage in a backpack, although an overnight bag with a shoulder strap would suffice if you travel lightly. Smaller bags or backpacks with wheels are convenient although we recommend your bag has carry straps. You will also need a day pack/bag to carry water and a camera etc for daytrips.
The sale of bottled water contributes to an enormous environmental problem around the world. In addition to the water in bottles, the production of a 1 litre plastic bottle takes 2 litres of water and 200ml of oil. A large proportion end up in limited landfill or discarded in waterways and natural environments. Please avoid the purchase of bottled water by refilling from the tap, public fountain, or from drinking water dispensers which are provided at some of our accommodation.

The most convenient and cheapest way to acquire money is via an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) or Bancomat as they are often referred to. Check with your bank in advance concerning the suitability of your account/card overseas and any international fees that will be applied.
You can obtain local currencies easily at airport's and major train station's, but be sure to bring some extra emergency cash that can be exchanged if the ATMs are not functioning.
When leaving home don't forget your PIN and make sure you know the telephone number for cancelling your card if it is stolen. Keep this in a safe place.
Credit cards are not always accepted in stores and restaurants. While travelling we recommend you carry some cash to pay for restaurant bills and other services. Change can be difficult to obtain so throughout the day, try to gain as many small denominations as you can.
You might be advised to take some of your money as travellers' cheques from a major financial institute. Travellers' cheques have security advantages, however please be aware that the exchange rates may not be favourable and that it is difficult to change Travellers' cheques in most countries. Be particularly aware that after hours money exchanges and hotel receptions carry high commissions- sometimes up to 20%.
The Euro (EUR) is the official currency only in the following of our destinations: Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain. All other destinations still do have their national currencies.

For money safety we recommend that you carry your cash and credit cards in a secure money belt or pouch concealed under your clothes.
All departure taxes should be included in your international flight ticket.
If you need to be contacted while travelling we recommend email. Email cafes are generally available throughout the regions we visit, although it is possible you may be without email contact for several days on some itineraries. If someone wishes to contact you in an emergency while you are on one of our trips we recommend that they contact your local booking agent, or refer to our emergency contact details. We don't recommend that family and friends try to contact you through hotels, as they are subject to change and the reception staff may not speak English.
While we always endeavour to provide the best possible holiday experience, due to the nature of travel and the areas we visit sometimes things can and do go wrong. Should any issue occur while you are on your trip it is imperative that you discuss this with your group leader or our local partner straight away so that they can do their best to rectify the problem and save any potential negative impact on the rest of your trip.
We recognise that there may be times when your group leader/local partner may not be able to resolve a situation to your satisfaction - if this is the case please ask the leader if you may speak to their direct manager.
You may also choose to provide details in your online feedback which we ask you to complete within 30 days of the end of your trip but we do ask you to be aware that it is very difficult for us to provide any practical help after the trip is complete.
All OUT Adventures travelers need to be in good physical health in order to participate fully in the group travel experience.
If, in the opinion of our group leader, any traveler is unable to complete the itinerary without undue risk to themselves and/or
the rest of the group, OUT Adventures reserves the right to exclude them from all or part of a trip without refund. We therefore
ask that you read the itinerary in these Trip Notes thoroughly and then realistically self-assess your physical ability to complete
the trip as described. Please consult with your doctor if you have any doubts.

We strongly recommend the use of a neck wallet or money belt while travelling, for the safe-keeping of your passport,
air tickets, cash and other valuable items. Leave your valuable jewelry at home - you won't need it while travelling.
Many of our hotels have safety deposit boxes, which is the most secure way of storing your valuables.
A lock is recommended for securing your luggage. Your leader will accompany you on all included activities however
during your trip you will have some free time to pursue your own interests, relax and take it easy or explore at your leisure.
While your group leader will assist you with the available options in a given location, please note that any optional
activities you undertake are not part of your OUT Adventures itinerary, and OUT Adventures makes no representations
about the safety of the activity or the standard of the operators running them. Please use your own good judgment when
selecting an activity in your free time. Please also note that your group leader has the authority to amend or cancel
any part of the trip itinerary if it is deemed necessary due to safety concerns. For more details on the type of conditions

We recommend that you take a moment to read through this information before travelling, and would appreciate any

Fire Precautions:
Please be aware that local laws governing tourism facilities in Europe differ from those in your home country and not all the accommodation which we use has a fire exit, fire extinguishers or smoke alarms.
Traffic and driving on opposite sides of the road:
Depending on where you come from please note that drivers in this part of the world may drive on the opposite side of the road from what you are used to. Look both ways before crossing any road. Traffic can be a little more chaotic than you might be used to at home and the roads narrower. Be aware!
Petty theft and personal safety:
While travelling in Europe there is the risk of pick-pocketing and petty theft, particularly in the more touristy cities. We recommend that you exercise caution when walking alone at night and encourage you to walk together and only on main, well lit thoroughfares. Be particularly vigilant on public transport. Simple measures like carrying your day pack on your front, not hanging your bag over the back of your chair and wearing a money belt will reduce any chance that your valuables should go missing.
With the exception of our Comfort and In Style trips, our group trips are designed for shared accommodation and do not involve a single supplement. Single travellers share with people of the same sex for the duration of the trip, in accommodation ranging from twin to multi-share. Please note some of our itineraries have accommodation booked on a mixed gender share basis - where applicable this will be specified in our Trip Notes. On our Comfort & In Style trips you have the choice of sharing or paying a single supplement. Please note that this only applies to accommodation during the tour. Pre- and post-trip accommodation will be booked on a single room basis.
We believe strongly in low impact, or rather, positive impact tourism. Broadly speaking this means that we try to minimize the negative aspects of tourism on the local cultures and environments that we visit and highlight the positive aspects. Illegal drugs will not be tolerated on our trips. Possessing or using drugs not only contravenes the laws of the land but also puts the rest of the group at risk. Smoking marijuana and opium is a part of local culture in some parts of the world but is not acceptable for OUT Adventures travelers. OUT Adventures' philosophy of travel is one of respect towards everyone we encounter, and in particular the local people who make our destinations such special places. The exploitation of prostitutes is completely contrary to this philosophy. Our group leader has the right to expel any member of the group if drugs are found in their possession or if they use prostitutes.
All OUT Adventures travelers are required to sign a Participation Form on day 1 of the trip. Please note that signing the form is a prerequisite of travelling with OUT Adventures. The wording of this form follows: "I understand that travelling with OUT Adventures may involve risks (and rewards) above and beyond those encountered on a more conventional holiday, and that I am undertaking an adventure trip with inherent dangers. I understand that I am travelling to geographical areas where, amongst other things, the standard of accommodation, transport, safety, hygiene, cleanliness, medical facilities, telecommunications and infrastructure development may not be of the standard I am used to at home or would find on a conventional holiday. I have read and understood the OUT Adventures Trip Notes for the trip I am undertaking and have provided details of any pre-existing medical conditions I have to OUT Adventures' representatives.
I accept these risks and obligations and I fully assume the risks of travel. I release OUT Adventures from any liabilities connected to these risks to the maximum extent permitted by law."
