Guyana Nature Experience Summary

Add to Shortlist

Day 1 Georgetown

Guyana's capital and largest city, the influences of Georgetown's Caribbean location are evident on every street corner - from the vibrant markets and street stalls to lively bars and reggae clubs.

Day 2 Kaieteur Falls

The Potaro River flows over sandstone and drops 226 metres into a deep gorge at the magnificent Kaieteur Falls - no other falls can rival the magnitude of this sheer drop.

Days 3-4 Iwokrama Rainforest

Established as a protected area in 1996, the Iwokrama Rainforest is a vast wilderness of one million acres in the heart of one of the world's last untouched tropical forests.

Day 5 Iwokrama Canopy

A walkway built 35 metres up in the Iwokrama Canopy is a great place to observe the local birdlife, and sometimes monkeys, from a tree-top vantage point.

Days 6-7 Surama Village

Surrounded by the densely forested Pakaraima Mountains, the Amerindian village of Surama is a small community of the Makushi tribe who still observe many traditional practices of their ancestors.

Days 8-9 Annai

Annai is a small community on the edge of the Rupununi Savannah, an extensive area of grassland with termite mound, sparse woodland and fascinating birdlife.

Days 10-11 Karanambu

Karanambu Ranch is the home of Diane McTurk, widely known for her work in rehabilitating orphaned, giant river otters. This stretch of the Rupununi River is amazingly rich in birdlife and other river creatures.

Day 12 Yupukari Village

The village of Yupukari is home to Caiman House, the hub of several development projects, including an ongoing field study of the black caiman, the largest member of the alligator family.

Days 13-14 Georgetown

Georgetown is laid out in a rectangular pattern with wide, tree-lined avenues and a fascinating collection of wooden colonial buildings including the State House, dating from 1852.
