Day 1 Antigua

Become acquainted with Antigua, Guatemala's charming one-time capital. Surrounded by huge volcanos and networked by quiet cobblestone streets, this is a delightful place to spend some time in. As this trip doesn't actually spend much time in Antigua, perhaps consider arriving some days early to allow time for exploring the vibrant street markets and bouncing nightlife.

Days 2-3 Copan

Drive east through the sparse Guatemalan countryside into neighbouring Honduras. Go for a wander among the elaborate ancient ruins of Copan, learning about Mayan culture and perhaps spying scarlet macaws swooping through the forest.

Days 4-6 Roatan Island

Hop aboard a ferry to Honduras' Roatan Islands for two days of carefree Caribbean vibes. As one of the most affordable scuba-diving destinations in the world, this is the perfect place to join the underwater world. Then, when evening closes in, settle back to a memorable sunset or perhaps head for the famous Treetanic Bar.

Day 7 Comayagua

Continue on by local bus to Comayagua. Admire some classic Honduran cathedrals or mingle with the locals in the lush grounds of the Parque Central.

Days 8-9 Granada

Cross the border into Nicaragua and arrive in Granada, one of Central America's oldest cities. Perhaps take a cruise out on Lake Nicaragua, pop into the markets and museums or enjoy a tour to Mombacho or Masaya Volcano National Parks. Come evening, a stroll along Granada's atmospheric streets is the perfect way to see out the day.

Days 10-11 Ometepe Island

Cruise out by boat to Ometepe Island on Lake Nicaragua. Home to two volcanoes, the island's fertile soil has produced tropical forests and several small-scale fruit and coffee plantations. Sit back on the lake's shores with a cup of the local blend or, for the more actively inclined, set out on an ascent of one of the volcanoes.

Days 12-13 Monteverde

Keeping on further south, arrive in the renowned eco-haven of Costa Rica. With more than 320 bird species and 100 different types of mammals residing in it, the Monteverde cloud forest is an exceptional place to explore whether by foot, horse, mountain bike or zip-lining through the forest canopy.

Days 14-15 La Fortuna/Arenal Volcano National Park

With the epic Arenal Volcano looming in the background, the small town of La Fortuna makes for the perfect base from which to explore the area's various natural attractions. Choose between shooting the rapids of on a whitewater rafting expedition, heading out into the country by horseback or wandering among the treetops on a canopy walk. Then soak the day's exertions away with a spell in the local hot springs with spectacular views of Arenal Volcano.

Days 16-17 San Jose

An intriguing fusion of traditional and western sensibilities, Costa Rica's lively capital exudes a gritty charm. Get nattering with the locals in Mercado Central, chow down on some super-cheap fare or barter for handicrafts in the colourful street stalls.

Days 18-20 Puerto Viejo de Talamanca

Hop aboard a local bus and drive through the rolling countryside to the chilled-out beach town of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. The nearby Cahuita National Park, known for its array of wildlife including sloths, snakes and birdlife, is well worth a visit in spare time. Alternatively, hire out a surfboard and clock up some tube time.

Days 21-23 Isla Bastimentos

Cross into Panama and zap out to the slow-paced vibe of Bocas del Toro. Surrounded by pristine coral reefs and some beautiful coastal coves, this is an eden for beach buffs.

Days 24-25 Boquete

Trade the warm sea-breezes for the crisp mountain air of Boquete. With a full free day here, perhaps embark on a hike along the Sendero Los Quetzals or just sit back and admire the superb mountain views.

Days 26-27 Santa Catalina

Head back to the coast for some further beach time in Santa Catalina - a small seaside village known for its fishing, diving and monster surf.

Days 28-29 Panama City

A capital boasting both towering skyscrapers and well-worn colonial edifices, Panama City is a city with few equivalents. Take a tour through the crumbling Casco Viejo, set off for some birdwatching in Soberania National Park or take an excursions down the world's most famous canal. The city also hosts a heaving nightlife, so why not gather the group for a final night of nocturnal frivolities.
