The home of French popes for more than a century, Avignon is famous for its gothic architecture – with the grand papal palace serving as its crowning jewel. Beginning with lunch at a local bistro, explore the fortified halls of the palace before examining the elegant Pont St-Benezet – an unusually shaped bridge that was once the only crossing point between France and the mighty Roman Empire.
