Bienvenidos! Welcome to Lima. Your Bite-size Break kicks off when you meet your guide in the hotel foyer at 3.30pm and head out for a tour of Surquillo market. Here you’ll discover the building blocks of Peruvian cuisine as you explore a huge variety of fruits, vegetables, and fiery spices. Maybe make a purchase or two from the wonderful selection – from aji limo to aji mirasol, aji panca, cumin, and the wonderful fresh limes, chirimoya, and lucuma fruits, this place really is a feast for your senses. Next, take a city bus (approximately 30 minutes) to a local family home in the residential neighbourhood of Chorrillos (south of Barranco and Miraflores). Here, the star is Doña Mechita, a caring Peruvian mother and the best cook in her family. She’ll share family recipes that have been passed down through generations. You’ll learn to prepare a classic ceviche, Peru’s national dish, from fresh fish and a delicious mix of limes, onions, coriander, and a few other secret ingredients. You’ll also try a surprising chicha morada. Never heard of it? This purple corn drink is typical of Lima, and the corn is believed to have healing properties. To round it all out, learn to prepare the perfect pisco sour. Then you’ll feast on your creations for dinner. You can then return to your hotel, or continue to explore. Your guide will have plenty of suggestions for evening activities in this city obsessed with food.

Notes: If you have any issues with the pick-up on Day 1 of this trip, please call the Intrepid office on +(51) 99605 5559. You will need to bring your passport and Andean Immigration Card to the 3:30pm meeting, so that your guide can make a copy to comply with Peruvian tax regulations.
This morning you’ll discover some of the fascinating history that surrounds Lima. Head south out of the city to the archaeological site of Pachacamac, an important pre-Incan administrative centre. This well-preserved religious compound features the massive Temples of the Sun and the Moon, each made from tens of millions of clay bricks. Continue on to a nearby pisco distillery to learn all about the different types and how they’re made. A brandy distilled from wine grapes, pisco is considered the national drink of Peru. Originally developed by Spanish settlers in the 16th century, it’s widely believed to have originated from the Peruvian town of Pisco – although its Peruvian origins are hotly contested by nearby Chile, which is also a major producer of the spirit. Go on a grape to glass discovery of what makes the perfect pisco, guided by a passionate local pisco maker. After a few piscos you might need the remainder of the afternoon for a little rest! In the early evening, join a walking tour through the bustling, beachside district of Barranco, where the streets are lined with traditional casonas (colonial-style houses). This place is also home to some of Peru's best nightlife, so why not take the opportunity to visit local bars and try various pisco cocktails along the way. Your tour will conclude at approximately 8pm in Barranco. After that, you can grab a bite to eat in here in a buzzing restaurant alongside the locals, or return to Miraflores. This Bite-size Break in Lima comes to an end on Day 3. There are no activities planned and you are free to leave at any time.
