Family Adventures

Your sense of adventure doesn’t disappear just because you have kids, so why should your family holiday destinations be limited to the ‘usual suspects’? On an Intrepid Family Adventure you and your kids will encounter plenty of real life experiences along the way – anything from riding a tuk-tuk in Bangkok, playing football with the Maasai in Kenya or sailing down the Nile in a felucca. Whatever it is, learning and exploring in the real world opens eyes and minds in a way the virtual world never can.

Why take your kids on an Intrepid Family Adventure?

  • Just for families

  • As the name suggests, these trips are designed just for families – including grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins! No adult can travel without a child and on most trips, kids are between 5-17 years of age. Check the detailed Trip Notes for each tour on our website to find the specific minimum ages.

  • Group sizes

  • Intrepid’s family group sizes are small enough that we aren’t intimidating - we can avoid the crowds and travel to places that large tour groups can’t access, but big enough so that there are a couple of other families to make it a good sociable number. Our robust group size lets us hop aboard local boats, buses or trains, we can eat at friendly, family-run restaurants, and we can stay in traditional accommodation and homestays.

  • Travelling with families

  • Travelling the Intrepid way is a bit like travelling with a group of friends - you just haven’t met them yet! Made up of 2-3 like-minded families, the kids tend to hit it off straight away, allowing adults to enjoy the group atmosphere and socialise in a relaxed environment. We often find that the whole family end up making lasting friendships with people from all over the world, staying in touch long after the adventure ends.

What can you expect on a Family Adventure?

Safety

As an adventure travel specialist, our itineraries are designed to immerse you in the destination with an authentic experience. But at the same time, we also want to ensure you have a safe trip. With staff on the ground providing up-to-the-minute information, we can make informed decisions and respond quickly to any destination situations. Additionally, we regularly check all of our equipment, accommodation, vehicles and activities. So you can relax in the knowledge you’re safe in our hands.

Hassle free

Let’s be honest, a lot of the things that people find exciting about travel - figuring out which train ticket to buy when everything’s written in Chinese, getting lost in a densely populated foreign city, finding accommodation at the drop of a hat - can be difficult when you have a family in tow.

But we believe that travel shouldn’t be hard work. So by letting the experts in family adventures look after the logistics, you can relax in the knowledge that we're  doing all the thinking for you.

Family itineraries

Our family itineraries are flexible, kid-centric, and suitably paced. They strike the balance between structured activities and free time, allowing you to decide how much or how little you do to get the most out of your holiday. They are also designed to maximize enjoyment and learning for the kids, at the same time as providing an immersion in the local culture for the adult members of the group.

And of course, we understand that rushing around to see everything can be hard work. So our family experts have specifically crafted the itineraries to make sure they run at a family-friendly pace and keep travelling time to a minimum. So you won’t have to pack your suitcase  every day, and you’ll get more time in each place to explore at your leisure.   We also visit key sites at the best time of day, and schedule our activities around meal times.

The local way

We like to travel the local way. Eat the local way. Interact with locals and live like locals. And if that means jumping in a canoe and paddling down a river, or riding a tuk-tuk through a maze of busy streets, then that’s what we do.  We might stay in a local homestay with a local family. Or we might eat at a family restaurant known only to the locals. And behind all of these local experiences is an expert local leader – English-speaking, enthusiastic and passionate about their country, they are the key to our truly local experience.  Our trained leaders are experts in facilitating group family adventure holidays, and of course, they love kids!

Of course, the kids will play a huge part in facilitating local interaction as well; they are the ultimate in cross-cultural ice-breakers. Whether it’s the local kids or your own, we all know that most kids aren’t afraid to ask questions and say hello. Before you know it they’ll be bartering in the bazaars, ordering food from a street BBQ, or asking to steer the mokoro. And that means you’ll be right in the thick of the fun stuff too. Above all, the shared experiences that come from you and your children interacting with different cultures around the world means that you’ll be creating memories together - once in a lifetime experiences that you’ll probably never forget.

Accommodation

Some of the details that aren’t as important to independent travellers are crucial to families - especially those with young children. But when planning is crucial, we know that some things you just can’t take for granted. So for all of our family trips, we take the extra measure of naming all of the accommodation used on the trip. So not only will you know if it’s got a pool (we strive to get hotels with pools where possible), you’ll be able to find out all of the amenities before you travel.

Travel dates to fit the holidays

After weeks of deliberating over which destination to travel to, it would be disappointing to find out that your chosen trip doesn’t depart on the date that you need it to! We understand your frustrations, so Intrepid family adventures are designed with departures to fit the school holidays. So once you know where you want to go, you can be assured that you can travel outside of term-time.
