Trying to decide the best real life experiences on Intrepid’s Balkan Adventure was a challenge for Intrepid traveller Deborah Netolicky. So to start with here are her top five places to eat and drink…
1. The Buza Bars, Dubrovnik.
Finding the secret little alleys through the old town walls to these rocky sea-side bars is half the fun!
2. Ulica Laze Teleckog, Novi Sad.
Pick any of the very cool, very busy, hilariously-themed bars on this street for drinks any night of the week. 1940s Cuba, Ye Olde England, bookstore chic, pirate arrrgh, Mexican sombrero cool - you name it, it’s there!

Based on the amount of vodka consumed in Russia, you can be excused for thinking everything is pickled! But there happens to be a special vegetable preserve that is celebrated each summer, as Intrepid’s Rachel Wasser explains…
“Entering Suzdal, in Moscow’s Golden Ring and just three hours from the capital, is like stepping back in time. Our Taste of Russia trip visits this unique city and helps convey a totally different image of Russia than any of the bigger cities like Moscow or St Petersburg.

Laos is excited to be hosting the 25th Southeast Asian Games this December. Preparations are well under way and Intrepid’s Nicki Gibson was recently enjoying the pre-games events when she was surprised to see an old friend…
“This is the first time Laos has been the host country and with Vientiane full of colour and buzzing with activity, it looks as if this will be a fantastic place to witness the celebrations from 09-18 December 2009.

Real life experiences are those ‘wow’ moments that happen when least expected. Much like Jim Stanton’s fortunate photo in the Czech Republic…
“My wife and I enjoyed our Road to Budapest adventure in April/May very much indeed. One of the highlights was a two-day visit to the fairy tale town of Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic.
This quaint old medieval town is built on a bend in the Vitava River and its flag-stoned squares and narrow streets remain almost as they must have looked in the thirteenth century. When the princely lineage of the Schwarzenbergs inherited Krumlov in the 1700s, they undertook a restoration and enlargement of the castle on the hill overlooking the town.

Many cities have reinvented themselves over the centuries, but few have had to rebuild as much as Berlin. With nearly four million residents from over 190 countries now living in its city centre, the largest city in Germany was a whole new experience for Intrepid Express reader Tori Salman…
“On my last visit, only a few short years after the reunification of Germany, Berlin was just one huge construction site. The Brandenburg Gate seemed like a dreary monument to reunification, set against a background of worksites. All these years later a stop in Berlin revealed a thoroughly refreshed and revitalised city. Now Berlin is almost too cool for school!

What’s over 2000 kilometres or 1240 miles long and can be seen from outer space? The Great Barrier Reef stretches from the tip of Cape York to Bundaberg and it’s one of John Kirk’s favourite places on the East Coast of Australia…
“The reef covers an area bigger than the United Kingdom, Holland and Switzerland put together. It includes 618 continental islands and contains over 2900 reefs and coral cays. It is home to 1500 species of fish, 400 species of coral, 4000 species of molluscs, 500 species of seaweed, 215 species of birds, 16 species of sea snake, 6 species of sea turtles, a large population of dugongs and a host of sponges, anemones, worms, crustaceans, shells, sea stars, and sea urchins… not to mention seasonal visits by several types of jellyfish and stingers.
