Intrepid rolls out carbon free future

intrepidexpress | about Intrepid, responsible travel | Wednesday, 11 November 2009

laos cyclingWe’re thrilled to announce that Intrepid Travel now has 500 carbon offset trips available in 2010!

The move comes on the back of Intrepid’s successful experiment this year with offering 38 carbon offset trips. Our reports show that there were no significant changes in booking patterns to these 38 trips in 2009, with the increased cost not discouraging travellers (on average less than 50 cents per day per traveller). These trips sold more or held steady against other small group adventures.

mali camel rideSince Jacquie Burnside joined Intrepid as a group leader many moons ago, she’s seen the company grow to be one of the world’s most respected adventure travel operators. You can pack of whole lot of amazing real life experiences into twenty years, and as Jac has just discovered on her latest adventure, it’s amazing how much fun you can cram into 26 days in Ghana and Mali

“In 1988 on my very first big trip overseas, I took a five month overland safari from Egypt to Tanzania and then up through Central Africa and across the Sahara to Europe! This was at about the same time that Darrell and Manch were travelling with friends on the southbound route from London to Nairobi, when they conceived the business idea that was to become Intrepid Travel. I joined this fledgling company some 5 years later.

running with no bull

intrepidexpress | about Intrepid, responsible travel | Friday, 16 October 2009

spanish toreadorWhen considering supporting local events such a the Pamplona running of the bulls or bullfighting in Catalonia, as with most animal welfare matters Intrepid Travel has chosen to side with the experts at the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA).

While we appreciate that events such as Pamplona’s famous bull run are steeped in tradition, it doesn’t detract from the fact that bulls are forced to run en masse down cobbled streets, which causes significant stress and risks serious injury to both the bulls and the people attending. Many of WSPA’s member societies in Spain, France and Portugal are working hard to get this cruel practice banned.

photography competition winners

intrepidexpress | about Intrepid, photographic memory | Wednesday, 30 September 2009

families winnerTravellers have combed great cities and climbed mountain trails to capture special travel photos and we are very excited to celebrate their achievements and announce the winners of the 2009 Intrepid Photography Competition!

As you can imagine, trying to pick winners from so many fantastic entries was a very tough task for our panel of judges. Eventually they narrowed it down to a select few, but they wanted to pass on their congratulations to everyone who entered as the standard of photographs was exceptional. The love of travel and appreciation of real life experiences was evident in the images and we look forward to sharing as many as possible with you in our Intrepid publications.

russia boots and all

intrepidexpress | about Intrepid, responsible travel | Wednesday, 09 September 2009

russian bootsBabushka Tonya Makarova, former scientific researcher, goes out onto the street which leads to the Kremlin every Saturday and Sunday in order to earn some money. Next to her small, bright camping tent are framed photos of herself surrounded by children and clippings from newspaper articles.

All week Babushka Tonya is busy making small souvenir felt boots, then an artist decorates them and the result is no ordinary Russian memento. With the money she earns, Baba Tonya buys things that children from a nearby orphanage really need: books, fur boots, clothes and more. A pair of her felt boots cost 300 rubbles, but as Tonya says, “your money will be in the children’s hands.”

an intrepid idea

intrepidexpress | about Intrepid | Wednesday, 02 September 2009

darrell and manch

It’s a coming of age like no other. No longer a teenager, in 2009 Intrepid Travel is cracking open the bubbly and celebrating its 20th year. It’s been quite a ride, so we sent Intrepid’s Eliza Anderson to find out where the idea for one of the world’s leading travel companies began…

“For best mates, Darrell Wade and Geoff Manchester, it all started with a six-month trip across Africa in a converted rubbish truck.

Back in 1988 Darrell and Geoff were young professionals, uninspired by the daily grind and yearning to hit the open road. After taking an Encounter Overland trip from Kathmandu to London a few years earlier, Darrell and his brother-in-law had always wanted to organise their own overland trip. After seeing the film The Gods Must be Crazy they decided to make it Africa.
