Days 1-2 Addis Ababa

Visit Ethiopia's bustling capital, Addis Ababa, and indulge in flavoursome local cuisine at an atmospheric neighbourhood eatery.

Day 3 Dejen

Stop off for a gawk at the Blue Nile Gorge en route to Dejen.

Days 4-6 Bahir Dar

Cruise out to the Ethiopian Orthodox churches on Lake Tana's islands and peninsulas. Visit the legendary Blue Nile Falls, known locally as the 'water that smokes', passing through small villages along the way.

Days 7-9 Lalibela

Nestled among the country's northern hill country, Lalibela is home to 13 myth-laden churches hewn from the surrounding rocks. Join a guided tour around the hallowed structures and learn about the histories and legends that allegedly played a role in the construction of the churches.

Days 12-13 Aksum

Travel through the Ethiopian countryside to one of the country's greatest natural habitats.

Day 15 Debark

Spend the day preparing for a two-day trek in the famed Simien Mountains.

Days 16-18 Simien Mountains National Park

Home to some staggering natural scenery and a number of animals found nowhere else on the continent, a hike through the Simien Mountains is a guaranteed highlight of any visit to Ethiopia. Spend two days hiking across sheer mountain passes and deep ravines, through tiny hamlets and past eroded volcanic craters and raging rivers.

Days 19-20 Gonder

Discover the castles, churches and palaces of Gonder, often referred to as 'Africa's Camelot'.

Travel across the sparse Ethiopian landscape to Mersa.

Arrive back in vibrant and cosmopolitan Addis. Perhaps brave the hustle of Addis Mercato, Africa's biggest open air market, or suss out the local bar scene.

Days 24-25 Lake Ziway

Travel to Lake Ziway and learn about the culture of Tulu Gudo Island's Zay people.

Days 26-28 Bale Mountains National Park

Search for the Simien fox on the high plateaux of the Bale Mountains National Park. Perhaps saddle up and explore the varying landscape of exotic moorlands and thick forest on horseback.

Days 29-30 Wendo Genet/Awassa

Pay a visit to the Awassa Children's Project, which promotes sensible, culturally responsible relief work aimed at assisting children primarily orphaned by Aids, as well as educating the population about the disease. See how the members of the organisation work tirelessly to bring about better healthcare and a higher standard of living for their community.

Days 31-32 Arba Minch

Travel to Arba Minch, a town offering spectacular views of the two Rift Valley lakes – Abaya and Chamo. Perhaps scour the stalls for souvenirs in the local market or board a boat and journey into Lake Chamo National Park to see huge crocodiles.

Days 33-35 Omo Valley Region

Travel into the Omo Valley and encounter remote tribes with histories and customs that have been largely untouched by Western culture.

Days 36-37 Konso

Learn of the traditional customs of the Konso people. Tour the local dwellings and wander through the local market, witnessing a way of life that's passed down through generations.

Day 38 Moyale

Cross into northern Kenya and set up camp in the small market town of Moyale. Maybe head out for a stroll through the local market, where Kenyans and Ethiopians mingle in a friendly atmosphere.

Day 39 Marsabit

Pass through eerie lunar landscape en route to Marsabit, a town at the foot of an extinct volcano. Trek through the forests to Lake Paradise, a popular elephant and buffalo hangout.

Days 40-41 Samburu National Reserve

Trek into the Samburu National Reserve, a pristine wilderness, home to some of Kenya's most fascinating tribes. Keep an eye out for giraffes, zebras and gerenuks in their natural habitat.

Day 42 Naro Moru

Head out on safari through the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, home to endangered black and white rhinos and Kenya's only resident population of wild chimpanzees.

Days 43-44 Nakuru National Park

Take a game drive through Lake Nakuru National Park, known for its abundant population of pink flamingos. Keep cameras at the ready to snap some shots of these glamorous birds, as well as several members of Africa's Big Five.

Day 45 Lake Naivasha

Relax on the scenic shores of Lake Naivasha, and perhaps head out by boat in search of hippos wallowing in the shallows.

Day 46 Nairobi

Pass by colourfully dressed Masai tending to their herds of cattle on the way back to cosmopolitan Nairobi, the country's frenetic hub. Take to the city streets and make the most of the premium restaurants and lively bar scene on offer.

Day 47 Nakuru National Park

Head to Nakuru for a night camped out on a dairy farm.

Day 48 Kericho

Take a morning game drive through Lake Nakuru National Park before an optional tea plantation tour in Kericho.

Days 49-50 Jinja

Cross the border into Uganda and pitch a tent by the shores of Lake Victoria. Jinja is the country's adventure capital, so perhaps get the adrenaline pumping on a bungee jump or whitewater rafting outing.

Day 51 Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Visit Uganda’s Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, an important wildlife initiative that helps to protect these endangered species. Join a local ranger on a guided walk for the chance to observe these impressive beasts in their natural habitat.

Day 52 Kaniyo Pabidi Forest

Venture into the Budongo Forest for unrivalled chimpanzee spotting opportunities in Kaniyo Pabidi.

Days 53-54 Murchison Falls National Park

Marvel at the might of Murchison Falls in the country's largest National Park. Set out an afternoon game drive in the delta – home to elephants, buffaloes, giraffes and antelopes.

Day 55 Kampala

Drive on to Kampala, one of Africa's more pleasant capital cities.

Day 56 Lake Mburo National Park

Set up camp on the scenic shores of Lake Mburo. Try to spy hippos, buffaloes, zebras and any number of other animals on an afternoon walking safari.

Day 57 Lake Bunyonyi

Make tracks to Lake Bunyonyi – home to some of the country's most picturesque scenery. Perhaps jump in a dugout canoe for a paddle on its still, blue waters.

Days 58-59 Ruhengeri/Gorilla trek

Journey on into Rwanda. Visit Kigali's moving Genocide Memorial for a glimpse into the country's tragic past, then continue on to Ruhengeri – the base for exploring one of the last remaining domains of the rare mountain gorilla.

Day 60 Kabale

Travel back into Uganda via Cyanika.

Day 61 Queen Elizabeth National Park

Descend through the Great Rift Valley towards Queen Elizabeth National Park. In the afternoon, take a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, well known for its healthy population of hippos and birdlife.

Day 62 Mbarara

Day 63 Jinja

Embark on a guided walk through Lake Mburo National Park, keeping a lookout for zebras, topis and leopards, before making tracks for Jinja.

Day 64 Eldoret

Cross back into Kenya and visit Eldoret – a high altitude town that has produced scores of the country's best marathon runners.

Days 65-66 Nairobi

Take one final game drive through Nakuru National Park before returning to Nairobi where this incredible African adventure comes to an end.
