Arrive in colonial Quito and make the most of free time while exploring the architecture, history and culture of this fascinating city. The Old Town is so well preserved that it has earned the status of a UNESCO World Heritage site, and a wander down Quito’s oldest street, Calle La Ronda, offers a unique insight into the colonial past of the city. Learn more about the history of Quito at one of the many museums, or enjoy a drink at one of the trendy bars, cafes or restaurants in the Mariscal district.
Travel to the Galapagos’ largest island, the seahorse-shaped Isla Isabela. Owing its distinctive silhouette to the merging of six large volcanoes into one single landmass, Isabela offers a fantastic introduction to Galapagos landscapes and wildlife. A three-night stay with a friendly local family presents plenty of time to explore the island and its inhabitants. The island’s Giant Tortoise Breeding Centre is a great place to learn more about these ancient creatures and get up close and personal with them - while snorkelling off the coast provides a chance to see sea turtles, rays and a kaleidoscope of tropical fish.
A visit to the pristine, white, sandy beach of Tortuga Bay on Isla Santa Cruz reveals some of the Galapagos’ most noteworthy animals, including marine iguanas, sea lions and flamingos. Chill-seekers can kick back on the beach while energetic types can have a go at bodyboarding and surfing. Once home to the late, great Lonesome George (the Galapagos’ most famous Giant Tortoise), the Charles Darwin Research Station is a great place to observe many species of tortoises and land iguanas that have been brought back from the brink of extinction.
Opt to hike to the top of Frigate Bird Hill for panoramic views out over the Pacific towards Santa Cruz, Floreana and Santa Fe, or observe sea lions and magnificent frigatebirds on the shores of Mann Beach. The following day, why not get to swim with playful sea lions at Isla de Lobos en route to Kicker Rock. The remains of an underwater volcano, Kicker Rock rises vertically 150 m out of the sea and makes for a truly impressive sight.
Bid farewell to the enchanted Galapagos Islands as the tour heads back to Quito for the final night. There’s still time to enjoy the city’s nightlife and get a last taste of South American culture before this trip ends.
