Day 1 Quito

Travel to Quito and discover this vibrant city resting beneath Volcan Pichincha. Explore the picturesque streets and cobblestone alleys on a walking tour. The many churches, cathedrals and colonial mansions reflect the history of the region and deserve to be further explored.

Days 2-3 Isla San Cristobal

Fly to San Cristobal Island in the Galapagos archipelago. Mountain bike around the island, stopping off to see cheeky sea lions sunbathe at La Loberia, before a well-earned dinner back in town. The next day, head out to Isla de Lobos and Cerro Brujo Beach to observe blue-footed boobies and to swim or snorkel among turtles and manta rays. Visit the Interpretation Center to learn about the Galapagos’ history before heading to Mann Beach for another swim.

Days 4-6 Isla Floreana/Isla Isabela

Glimpse dolphins frolicking in the waves and experience some of the Galapagos' best snorkelling at Isla Floreana. Venture into Floreana’s highlands to visit the mysterious pirate and whaler caves. Walk along mangrove-lined paths to the Giant Tortoise Breeding Center and learn about the efforts being made to prevent their extinction. Hop aboard pangas (small boats) to explore Shark Alley, a popular nesting site for marine iguanas. On day six, get a bird's-eye view of this magical landscape from Volcan Sierra Negra – one of the most active volcanoes in the region – and then settle into island life before dinner.

Days 7-8 Isla Santa Cruz

Start the day kayaking the islands' pristine waters in search of the Galapagos penguin and other wonderful creatures. Transferring to Isla Santa Cruz, visit the interesting and informative Charles Darwin Research Station to meet the breeds of tortoises and land iguanas rescued from the brink of extinction. Head to the white sands of Tortuga Bay for an afternoon swim in breakers dotted with quirky marine iguanas.

Day 9 Quito

Journey into the highlands of Santa Cruz and see the amazing lava tunnels that have created a unique habitat for wildlife. Observe giant tortoises in the wild before saying goodbye to these incredible islands and jumping on a flight back to Quito. Enjoy free time to sample traditional Ecuadorian cuisine at a local eatery or street stall and revel in the night-life of this enchanting city. There should also be a chance to hit the markets for a spot of souvenir shopping.

Day 10 Lima

Arrive in Lima, Peru's colourful capital, and unravel its fascinating history on a walking tour around the city's major sights. The vibrant suburb of Miraflores, with its superb restaurants and lively night-life, is a particular highlight.

Days 11-12 Amazon Jungle

Fly to the frontier town of Puerto Maldonado and venture into the dense Amazon jungle by canoe. Macaws, monkeys, peccaries, jabirus, otters and thousands of butterflies all coexist in this amazing ecosystem – so keep those eyes peeled. Learn about the medicinal properties and practical uses of the plants on a jungle walk with a local guide.

Day 13 Cuzco

If Lima is Peru's head, Cuzco is definitely the country's heart and soul. A town perfectly suited to exploration by foot, discover the central plaza's ornate colonial churches and then head for the impressive Inca ruins dotting the city's outskirts.

Day 14 Sacred Valley/Ollantaytambo

Travel by private bus through the region's lush, terraced valleys to the ancient town of Ollantaytambo – one of the few places where the Incas defeated the Spanish.

Days 15-18 Inca Trail/Machu Picchu

Embark on a four-day trek along the iconic Inca Trail – Peru's timeworn trade route. Take in the vast panoramas of this ancient trail across high mountain passes, barren plateaux and dense tracts of cloud forest, stopping off to observe the ruins of villages and temples along the way. Take some time to explore the architectural wonder that is Machu Picchu.

Day 19 Cuzco

Get reacquainted with Cuzco, browsing the food stalls or bartering for colourful woollen garments at the central market.

Days 20-22 Puno/Lake Titicaca

Head out on a boat tour of the blue waters and bare islands of Lake Titicaca, the world's highest navigable lake. Stop in at the incredible floating reed community of Uros before getting a taste of local life on a family homestay.

Days 23-24 La Paz

Travel to Bolivia to spend some time in its largest city before this trip comes to an end. If you're feeling daring, why not take a bike ride down the world's most dangerous road. Alternatively, hit the markets for some souvenir shopping of a different kind at the Witches' Market, which sells an intriguing collection of ingredients used in traditional rituals.
