Journey from Melbourne along the Great Ocean Road and up to Alice Springs

From Melbourne's slick city scene to endearingly rustic Alice Springs, the dramatic beauty of the Great Ocean Road to the dusty expanses of the Red Centre and Coober Pedy's underground dwellings to Kings Canyon's delightful plunge pools, Australia's immense diversity becomes all too apparent on this 10-day adventure. Behold the dramatic backdrop rendered by the Twelve Apostles, get a true taste of the outback's isolation overnighting in William Creek and potter through the rust-coloured ravines of Kata Tjuta. Then make tracks through the world's largest cattle station, learn the secrets of one of the world's oldest surviving cultures and gawk at the world's biggest rock. An overland adventure that pulls out all the show-stoppers, this is the perfect introduction to Australia's southern centre.

About Australia

10 Day Melbourne to Alice Springs Explorer Summary

Add to Shortlist

Day 1 Day1 Melbourne/Great Ocean Road

Welcome to Melbourne, Australia's arts and culture capital. As this trip doesn't spend any real time exploring this exciting city, arriving a few days early to suss out the sights will be well rewarded. Perhaps venture down for a splash (season depending!) in St. Kilda Beach, snoop around Fitzroy's eclectic array of vintage shops or seek out the CBD's cosiest cafe. Then hit the highway bound for one of Australia's finest stretches of coast: the Great Ocean Road. Stop off at Bells Beach to watch the local surfers doing their thing, see koalas snacking on gum leaves in Kennett River and be spellbound by the Twelve Apostles. Spend the night in the Grampians National Park.

Days 2-3 Grampians National Park/Adelaide

Admire the rugged natural terrain of the Grampians on a number of brief hikes up to some lookout points. Hear about what this region means to the local Aboriginal people on a visit to the Brambuck Cultural Centre and stop by one of two impressive waterfalls. Continue the drive on to Adelaide.

Day 4 Adelaide/Flinders Ranges

Spend a full day becoming acquainted with Adelaide, South Australia's capital city. Perhaps take a stroll through the city's parks or head off to too-pretty Hahndorf. Trade the city for the hillside vineyards of the Clare Valley and sample some of the local wines for which the region is renowned.

Day 5 Oodnadatta Track/William Creek

Peruse the works of eccentric outback artist Talc Alf in Lyndhurs, then follow the historic route of the old Ghan railway. Break for lunch in Marree, hit the Oodnadatta track and pass the immense expanse of Lake Eyre before arriving in the blip-on-the-map town of William Creek.

Day 6 Coober Pedy

Make tracks through Anna Creek Station, the world's largest working cattle station. Arrive in the bizarre opal mining town of Coober Pedy, where almost everything is located underground to escape the scorching midday heat. Join a tour that includes an opal cutting demonstration and perhaps try out your own luck at 'noodling'. When evening sets, make like the locals do and bunk down underground.

Day 7 Coober Pedy/Erldunda

Off you hop to meet some of the rescued joeys and other wildlife at Josephine’s Gallery and Kangaroo Orphanage. Pass through the Dingo Fence, the longest manmade construction in the world, and arrive in Erldunda with the afternoon free to while away as you please.

Day 8 Kata Tjuta/Uluru

Continue the journey on to what is arguably Australia's most iconic natural attraction, Uluru. Explore the red-rock mounds of Kata Tjuta on a Valley of the Winds hike, then be treated to a magical desert sunset over Uluru.

Day 9 Uluru/Kings Canyon

Gain an insight into the traditional culture of the Mala people on a cultural interpretive walk. Learn about what the world's largest rock means to one of the world's oldest surviving cultures, and perhaps pick up some souvenirs at the Cultural Centre.

Day 10 Alice Springs

Set out for an exploration of the deep gullies and immense rock walls of Kings Canyon. Peer out across the Lost City, wander through the Amphitheatre, gaze up in wonder at the North and South Walls and perhaps take a cooling dip in the Garden of Eden. Jump back into the vehicle and make the final leg of this outback adventure to Alice Springs, where this Australian outback adventure ends.
