Day 1 San Jose

Arrive in San Jose and adjust to the amiable pace and attitude of Costa Rican culture. With a full day up your sleeves to explore this colourful city, perhaps set out for a walk in the lively San Pedro area or be dazzled by the shiny exhibits on display in the Gold Museum.

Days 2-3 La Fortuna/Arenal Volcano

Travel across the lush Costa Rican countryside to La Fortuna; our base for exploring the scenic surrounds of Lake Arenal. With a cache of natural attractions and wide range of activities designed for best experiencing them, this town is a nature enthusiast's dream. Wander through the rainforest tree tops on a canopy walk, hike up the active Arenal Volcano take a soak in the town's natural hot springs.

Days 4-5 Monteverde

Bask on the soft beaches of Manuel Antonio National Park, trek along its winding forest trails in search of armadillos, sloths and colourful birds or hire a board and hit the waves. When the sun sets, perhaps raise your glass to another idyllic day or prepare to sample some classic Costa Rican nighttime revelry.

Days 8-9 San Jose

Return to the relative modernity of San Jose. For those looking to make the most of the free time on hand, consider taking a stroll through the eclectic stalls of the Mercado Central or catching a local performance at the city's opulent Teatro Nacional.

Days 10-11 San Gerardo de Dota

Hit the road southbound to the lush mountain haven of San Gerardo de Dota. Head out on a quetzal-spotting tour with a local guide and perhaps cast a late afternoon line into the Savegre River – the cleanest river in a country renowned for them.

Days 12-13 Golfito

Spend two leisurely days getting back to basics in a rainforest lodge in the Refugio Nacional Golfito on the south Pacific Coast. Keep eyes peeled on a mangrove kayaking tour that could reveal monkeys, iguanas or dolphins, then maybe stretch out those tired limbs during an optional yoga class.

Days 14-15 Boquete

Cross the border into Panama and bliss out in the picturesque mountain village of Boquete.
