Who would have thought that 2012 would be the year that Intrepid’s Anya Hodson sets herself one of the biggest challenges of her life? It’s not surprising that she’s pledged to do this for a cause that she’s passionate about, as she always gives everything 110%, but the kind of challenge that she’s decided to take on is definitely outside her comfort zone…
“I can recall being in Cuzco last year, climbing hundreds of steps a day and feeling the grip of high altitude tightening on my chest and lungs. The sheer majesty of Macchu Picchu will never be forgotten, but the steep descent down so many steps caused aches in my bones that lingered for days. I remember thinking to myself that I could never do a trip that involved trekking or cycling for days on end – I just didnt think that I had it in me.
But now that the new year has arrived, myself and three team mates are set to challenge our minds, bodies and limits by completing a 100km walk in the Brisbane Oxfam Trailwalker event.
Teams of four enter this event and have 48 hours to walk or run the 100km trail, although our team is hoping to finish in 30 hours. It’s very likely that we’ll walk through the night (with little or no sleep) until we finish. The event held in Brisbane on 15-17 June 2012 raises vital funds for the programs delivered by Oxfam Australia. Oxfam Australia are an independent, secular, non-government organisation working with their partners in 29 countries to find lasting solutions to poverty and injustice. To support our team we’d love you to check out trailwalker.oxfam.org.au or join our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/theintrepidettes
The biggest step in taking on a new challenge is quite often just that very first one. I really did surprise myself in signing up for this challenge. But now that I’ve taken that first step, it feels like a whole world of new horizons awaits me. Trips that I would never dream of doing in the past, like the Serengeti and Kilimanjaro, or Cycle Vietnam now seem like a fabulous reward for taking that first step and making 2012 my best year yet! The biggest decision now will be deciding which Intrepid Big Challenge trip will I reward myself with!”
