taking a dip in the top end
Aussies are great swimmers and they’re so obsessed with water sports that they even invented Speedo swimwear and their own overarm stroke, now known famously as the Australian Crawl! But for visitors like Caroline Kehoe, taking the plunge Down Under can be a challenge…
“Now, being Irish and born on an island, you might expect that I would at some stage master the art of swimming. Well, not me. I was still terrified of it at this stage! Thing is… fear can hold you back from amazing experiences… which is why I opted for the canoeing trip along the Katherine River!
The sounds of white water rapids (small ones mind!) and the possibility of crocodiles didn’t rattle me enough to pull out at the last minute.
It was incredible… and not only did I feel like I had the biceps and triceps that could win me an arm wrestle with Arnold Schwartzenegger afterwards, I saw some of the most incredible scenery and wildlife during the day and camped out by the river on what turned out to be a full moonlit night.
I had my first outdoor experience (drop dunny – Aussie slang for toilet!) and more amazingly, I managed to stay in my canoe the whole time! I would whole-heartedly recommend it to anyone!”
