“My mother and I just did the Intrepid Urban Adventure – Bangkok Bike and had a fantastic time. We cycled along the Chao Phraya River to a local ferry, then loaded our bikes aboard and crossed to the other side, known as Thonburi. It really is like another world over there, it’s quieter, less high rises and a labyrinth of canals.
Our route took us right into the watery neighbourhoods to see teak houses, stilt homes, floating markets and to meet the local people who live on the canals (known as khlongs by the locals). Due to the unusual amount of rain this year the river was running high and so many of the laneways were submerged under about 5cm of water – but that does not stop the locals from getting around, and it did not stop us either as we rode along these pathways on our bikes. Our local guide, Kong, stopped along the way to buy us a coconutty treat from a lady’s small stall along the path. It was a local sweet served in a banana leaf – delicious. We rode to Wat Arun (The Temple of Dawn) and stopped for a look before heading back across the river.
Our Adventure included a few temples and many other interesting stops along the way, which made the 20kms seem easy to conquer. As a tourist in Bangkok it would be easy to miss the peaceful khlongs, and going there on a bike might seem crazy, but it’s a great way to get around and see another aspect of Bangkok.”
