milford sound magic

kayak milford sound new zealandThe South Island of New Zealand is one of the world’s greatest adventure playgrounds. From walking on an amazing glacier to viewing the country’s highest peak, there are so many travel highs, but the top real life experience for Intrepid traveller Kirra Worldon was taking to the water on Milford Sound…

“Dolphins, seals, waterfalls, clouds wisping over and around snow-capped mountains; Milford Sound is one of the most serene and beautiful places on earth. While there are dozens of different ways to explore it, I opted for an up close and personal wildlife experience. Fjord kayaking was an ideal way to embrace the natural spirit of this place.

Like the rest of Fiordland, Milford Sound receives a lot of rain. I was lucky to visit this natural beauty on a rainy day, as all the waterfalls were seen in their full glory and the dolphins were out to play. The weather didn’t detract one bit from the fun of gliding through the jade green waters and every one of my senses was over stimulated by the awe-inspiring backdrop. You can imagine the excitement as our cheerful Kiwi guide spotted a penguin. These playful little guys are also regular inhabitants of the sound, along with the occasional whale.

This is truly a vista to make you go ‘Oooo!’ A spectacular deluge of cascading waterfalls, sheer rocky cliffs and forests clinging to the slopes, all covered by a moody mist. If it’s not already, add Milford Sound to your bucket list, and another very valuable New Zealand tip: you’ve simply must try Hokey Pokey ice cream!”
