make it melbourne by moonlight
Sometimes the biggest wow factor hits when you find something new in a place you thought you knew well. Intrepid’s unique Urban Adventures are all about revealing the sides of cities that you never knew existed and as Intrepid’s Sally Johnson discovered, it can even happen in your home town…
“The most common question I hear is “do you get to try out the trips?” and I’m excited to say the answer is “yes!” Recently a group of Intrepid staff went to road test one of our newest Urban Adventures – Moonlight Kayak Tour – and it was amazing to see Melbourne from a completely different perspective.
After limbering up with a quick yoga session and safety briefing from our local guide, we geared up and jumped in our double sea-kayaks. Intrepid though we are, we were pleased to find the kayaks to be rather large and sturdy with plenty of places to keep bags dry. As the sun set we weaved under piers, through artistic sculptures and even under a big catamaran to arrive at our first stop, in-kayak fish and chips by the Dockland Pier. Fantastic!
Our bellies full and the sky now completely dark, we paddled on under the bright lights of the Bolte Bridge and crossed from the bay to Melbourne’s much-loved river, the Yarra. Passing by gorgeous architecture and Melbourne’s lively Southbank Boulevard was a beautiful experience. St Paul’s Cathedral bells rang out and the casino’s dramatic gas fire towers threw out flames on the hour as we glided by.
Finally we cruised past Federation Square and pulled up at the rowing clubs, conveniently located across from one of our favourite bars on the Yarra River. It was a spectacular urban experience and we were all buzzing with a new-found love of our own city. So whether you’re a Melbournian or visitor in town, this is a side of the city that you should really see!”

reads well. I want to do this very soon.
Taking a kayak down the rapids is even more exciting! Oh, I can’t wait!
