End of the world as we know it?

Darrell Wade readingIs it the end of the world as we know it? Darrell Wade, Intrepid co-founder, poses this serious question about climate change and considers the consequences of global inertia…

“Recently I read an alarming article in the New York Times. Global climate emissions are rising faster than predicted, temperatures are already increasing faster and the world is looking at a climate scenario that is significantly worse than the worst-case scenario of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Worse, there is no end in sight to the increase in carbon emissions.

The result? The world can expect higher seas and greater coastal flooding, more intense weather disasters like droughts and heat waves, and an extreme acidification of the ocean. Many experts believe the effects are already being felt – but they will get far worse.

I first became alarmed about Climate change In 2005. I was heading off to Botswana with my family and while looking for a book to keep me entertained on the flight, I read the line “Sometime this century the day will arrive when the human influence on the climate will overwhelm all other natural factors.” The book was The Weather Makers by Tim Flannery and it started a journey not just for me, but our entire company.

Intrepid has become a carbon neutral travel company since then, thanks to a huge effort by our staff and the with the incredible support of our travellers. But maybe we have all done too little, too late and that day of human influence has arrived? Let us know your thoughts – and I’ll update you on our story with climate change next week.”

Darrell’s discussions continue on his next post: Read the book, see the movie, change the world…
