Top trip: Road to Zanzibar

Serengeti lioness and cub TanzaniaTravelling to Africa and choosing a camping trip that crosses vast savanna, overnights in jungles and introduces you to fascinating cultures, is stepping out of many people’s comfort zone. For Peter Wicks it was a leap of faith in many ways, but it proved to be the trip of a lifetime…

Road to Zanzibar is very high on the must-do-again list. Being in our mid-50′s, my wife and I were both a little concerned about taking on a camping tour (the last the time we camped was pre kids), but our worries were very quickly laid to rest. The tents provided by Intrepid were clean, very easy to put up and just as easy to take down.

There were days that we were not as quick as the ‘youngens’, but before you could say “hey, a little help here” there was the wonderful Victor (tour leader) to lend a hand erecting the tent (which was fantastic after a day packed full of activities, when all you wanted was to get in and sleep), or helping to take the tent down so we could get on the way and enjoy another fun-filled day of adventures, but not before another fantastic meal cooked by our tour cook Bryson. How this man managed to surprise us with his culinary prowess meal after meal is beyond my comprehension, he really should be on “Master Chef”.

We got to see the Big Five in the Serengeti and we were given plenty of time to take photos and take in the fact that a lifetime of dreams was right there in of front us!

I am afraid there are just not enough superlatives to describe this tour and our Intrepid experience. Wow, what a great trip. It has really changed my mind on group tours. I had always thought that free travel was the best way to go, but Intrepid has opened my eyes. The trip, while being very well planned, still gave enough time to do our own thing.

My recommendation to anyone thinking about taking Road to Zanzibar with Intrepid is stop thinking and just do it!”
