Epic partnership for our planet
We’re delighted that the Shackleton Epic has chosen Fauna & Flora International (FFI) as a conservation partner. FFI protects threatened species and ecosystems worldwide, choosing solutions that are sustainable, based on sound science that take account of human needs. Older than the original Shackleton expedition, FFI was founded in 1903 and is the world’s longest established international conservation body and is a registered charity.
Operating in more than 40 countries worldwide – mainly in the developing world – FFI saves species from extinction and habitats from destruction, while improving livelihoods of local people.
We’re hoping that significant funds will be raised through the expedition, by expeditioners and their supporters, to help support FFI’s vital work to protect some of the most vulnerable ecosystems and species on the planet. This will include projects that are working towards climate change mitigation and adaptation.
FFI’s latest ‘Conservation Report’ documents an enormous range of collective conservation achievements in 2011. Together with their dedicated conservation partners, they helped:
- around 1.7 million marine turtle hatchlings reach the sea
- grow over 173,000 native tree seedlings for replanting
- train nearly 4,000 people in conservation skills
- conserve nearly 12 million hectares of natural habitats (terrestrial and marine).

The Shackleton Epic – Intrepid’s biggest adventure yet
The Shackleton Epic is a 56-day journey from Punta Arenas, Chile, down to the Antarctic Peninsula, via Elephant Island and South Georgia, finishing in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Epic indeed and ten Intrepid travellers will get to go along for the adventure in January 2013!
