Mekong moments

intrepidexpress | real life experiences | Wednesday, 22 August 2012

local life on mekong river cambodiaOur most vivid travel memories can come from iconic sights or famous locations, but so often it’s the less likely experiences that sneak up on you. For Sheryll Stapleton her ‘mmm moment’ was enjoyed on the longest river in Southeast Asia…

“I never dreamed I would experience something like this. Years later and I still think of this mightiest of rivers in my dreams. The magnificent Mekong with its eddies and swirls. The peacefulness of the long boat broken only by the gradually increasing and then decreasing roar of a faster vessel.

The hours whiled away, first wanting to see everything, then feeling the heat and sweat drip off my body and longing to close ones eyes and just drift by. Then the curiosity returns when we pull into a village.

I so vividly remember eating in a restaurant in this village at dusk. On the hillside looking down at the Mekong, feeling so isolated, my world at home could fall apart and no one would know where to find me.

I was so swallowed by the river and the jungle and it truly hasn’t let go of its hold on me yet and it’s my guess it never will. The memories are much more overwhelming than the actual. But one does need to experience it to understand. A longing to visit again almost over takes me and keeps me working long overtime hours in hope!”
