a record year for the intrepid foundation

intrepidexpress | about Intrepid | Wednesday, 01 August 2012

cope medical projectThe Intrepid Foundation was established in 2002 to donate funds to vital grassroots projects in the regions where Intrepid Travel operates, in the areas of healthcare, education, human rights, child welfare, sustainable development and environmental and wildlife protection.

The Foundation also makes donations to several well-respected international non-government organisations (NGOs) including PLAN, Amnesty International, Medecins Sans Frontieres and Greenpeace. Plus we make one-off grants to environmental and social causes, and contribute funds to emergency appeals.

Intrepid Travel matches all donations made by travellers and staff plus pays all administration costs, so donors know that every penny or cent of their donation – and much more – is going to a good cause!

Achievements in 2011 financial year:
Over the last three years, The Intrepid Foundation has been able to increase donations to community projects year on year, as a result of visiting more projects on Intrepid’s trips and educating group leaders on how to promote these projects to travellers.

In 2010/11 financial year The Intrepid Foundation proudly disbursed AU$395,000. This included a record AU$324,000 to support 40 community projects, ranging from the education of children in Tanzania, to nutritional support for communities high in the Peruvian Andes and the promotion of women’s rights in Timor-Leste.

Funds were disbursed to community projects as follows:
By project type
Social inclusion and education: AUD$1,361
Social inclusion and health/disability: AUD $56,938
Social inclusion and education, plus health/disability: AUD$28,862
Children/youth welfare and education: AUD$190,969
Conservation of nature (animal welfare, wildlife, biodiversity protection): AUD$45,483

By region
Asia: AUD$191,209
Africa/Middle East: AUD$63,904
Latin America: AUD$40,679
Europe: AUD$27,821

AU$17,000 was donated to NGOs and to emergency appeals following floods in Australia and earthquakes in New Zealand and Japan.

Sincere thanks to the generous donations and fantastic support from Intrepid travellers and the Intrepid team. Together we have made an immense difference in the lives of many. We have stood up for the protection fragile environments, helped communities to re-build following tragic disasters and offered support to fantastic grassroots organisations around the world. Here’s to another amazing 10 years – thank you!
