world’s fastest sushi train

japanese sushi displayCombining culinary adventures with your travel journeys is a must, especially in Japan where you can enjoy the freshest sushi, be tempted by tempura and even design your own okonomiyaki! And this is where delicious (and healthy) fast food meets super-fast local transport, as Aaron Davis explains…

“Part of the enjoyment of travel is getting from place to place. What can seem a chore in many countries is an enjoyable, speedy and sociable treat in Japan.

Japan Rail (JR) is undoubtedly the most efficient train system in the world. Having lined up for your Shinkansen (bullet train) at exactly the place where your carriage door opens, you will have just enough time to find your allotted seat before the train pulls away perfectly on time.

The seats on the bullet trains are very spacious and you really feel as if you are travelling first class, especially when the trolley girl comes past with food and drinks.

After settling in and meeting your neighbour it is time to enjoy your bento. Bento loosely translates as lunch box and there is an almost limitless variety of bentos available. Generally they consist of rice, pickles, meat or fish and vegetables. They vary from place to place and season to season, so they are a great way to sample local specialties while watching the stunning Japanese scenery whiz by at up to 300 kph (180 mph)!”
