marathon effort for egypt’s animals

intrepidexpress | animal antics,intrepid foundation | Tuesday, 17 April 2012

felix and kim enter egypt marathonIn late January, when the 19th Egyptian Marathon took place in Luxor, one special entrant caused some surprise and consternation. In fact the policeman at the car park said that young Felix wasn’t allowed.

After much negotiation by Felix’s companion, Kim, he was able to proceed and win hearts along the way. You see Felix is an orphan and resident of Animal Care in Egypt (ACE). That’s right, Felix is a donkey!

Kim Taylor, Co-Founder of ACE, and Felix, in their mutual best interests by-passed the 42km (26 mile) category and took part in the 5km (3 mile) kid’s race. The event was magnificent with 36 nationalities competing and with the impressive desert mountains and superb Hatshepsut temple providing a unique and stunning back drop. The temperature was mild at around 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit) and 44% humidity – perfect running conditions!

Also taking part from ACE were guest vets, British Becky and Australian Chris, who both completed the half marathon. The ACE team were running to raise funds for much needed isolation facilities at the ACE Centre in Luxor.

ACE was formally established in 2000 to help the working animals of Luxor, and this is still the majority of their work – donkeys and horses. However they also bring support to other animals needing help: cats, dogs, tortoises, camels, and even wild animals. For many years now, Intrepid travellers to Luxor have included a visit to ACE on their itinerary – and have been able to lend a hand to make a positive difference in the lives of animals.

The Intrepid Foundation – travellers making a difference
You too can make life better for animals like Felix in Egypt, by giving a donation to Animal Care in Egypt through The Intrepid Foundation. And the best thing is that twice as many animals can be helped because Intrepid Travel will double* your money!

* Donations will be matched by Intrepid Travel up to AU$5000 (or equivalent) per donor and a total of AU$400,000 each financial year.
