sacred valley peruIf you’ve ever wondered what we mean by ‘Intrepid real life experiences’, then this story from Jill Olsson on her Classic Peru trip explains perfectly…

“Our Intrepid trip to Peru last September provided my husband and I with memories that will last a lifetime. Whenever I look at the woven table runner in my home in New Zealand I am reminded of the hardworking women of that village we visited in the Sacred Valley between Cuzco and Ollantaytambo.

The minivan had trouble finding our destination as very few tourists have visited here. First step in learning about their daily life was a walk to the fields and then an exercise in cutting fodder with a hand sickle for their guinea pigs. This was no easy task and neither was my carrying it back to the village in a blanket very similar in pattern to my table runner. We were then shown how the alpaca/llama fibre was cleaned, carded, spun and woven – a real interest to me as a spinner. To know that it can it take up to one month to produce a runner such as mine made me realise how hard these people work.

Lunch soon followed and we were shown the immense hospitality of these people. They had gone to so much trouble to prepare the meal and I can honestly report that the guinea pig was delicious!”
