weird and wild new zealand

eating grubs in new zealandWhen 10 March, 2012, comes around there will be one town in New Zealand that turns from a mild-mannered community into the weird food capital. From wasp larvae ice-cream to wok fried clams, Hokitika celebrates the wild food flavours of the South Island’s West Coast. Locals say to bring along your appetite for fun, but as Diana Rihl discovered, a cast iron stomach comes in handy too…

“Spending the weekend at the Wildfoods Festival has to be one of my top travel food experiences. When you combine a bunch of crazy Kiwis with too much Monteith’s Beer and heaps of crazy food, only fun can come of it! I ate grasshoppers and roaches on toast, live huhu grubs (mmmm..maggots), and worm truffles, just to name a few. I’d have to say that the Tasty Titties booth topped it all though! It was a food stand selling nothing but fried cow udders. I got to choose my serving size (A Cup, B Cup, C Cup, etc) and dipping sauce. Yum!”
