When trying to come up with new fundraising ideas sometimes it pays to think outside the box. Or what about painting and decorating that box? Alison King shares her creative ideas for combining fun with helping others…
“Having travelled with Intrepid to Vietnam in 2005 and to Thailand, Cambodia and Laos in 2007, I was aware of the great work the Intrepid Foundation does in supporting many small NGOs that are running wonderful projects in these countries. I was also aware that Intrepid match donations, so that gave me even more incentive to do something to help, so last year my partner and I decided to host a ‘Paint-off Party’ to raise money for one such project.
We supplied canvases and paints and each guest created an artwork during the night. At the end of the evening we auctioned the paintings to each other. Our nominated project was Ptea Teuk Dong in Laos. We raised AU$460!
Following the success of this fun night, this year we decided to host a ‘Sculpture Party’. We arranged some supplies, including the contents of our recycling bin (egg cartons, milk bottles, magazines etc), and each guest created a unique masterpiece. Again we auctioned the pieces off and this time AU$500 was raised for the Kathmandu Environmental Education Project (KEEP) in Nepal.
The parties are a fun way of bringing people together and we’ve all had a brilliant time realising our inner creative talents (and shortcomings). It was even fun getting in a mess of paint and glue. Sales have ranged from $2.50 to $45 per piece, but above all we have all had a good laugh!
I would encourage everyone reading this to give it a go. It’s a very easy thing to organise, with great results for all involved. We are already planning our 2012 party. We have many more ideas: cooking; poetry; song writing… Who knows?”
