the festive spirit of puno

local women and kids in puno peruPuno is renowned as Peru’s folklore capital. It’s evident why if your visit coincides with Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria in February or La Diablada, the fantastic Puno festival that Liz Foster happened upon in November…

“After spending a fantastic night, although a very cold one, on an island on Lake Titicaca, we returned to Puno. The city was in the full swing of a fabulous festival. A festival that pays respect to the ancient spirits of Lake Titicaca.

From the time we got off the boat until we got back to our hotel we were surrounded by amazing colour, laughter, friendliness and noise. Noise as only the Peruvians can make! It was loud. Very, very loud. The procession had so many dancing people in magnificent costumes. Different bands playing different tunes.

Everyone partied on into the night. It was an event that no local would have missed, let alone a tourist from the other side of the world. However, some time later and after a few pisco sours, that noise did fade into sleep. What a great event. It was by chance that I was there at the right time but the vivid images of colour are still embedded in my memory. Fantastic!”
