cheap californian dreams

usa seagullNever let it be said that Intrepid staff are cheap – but it’s true that we are always on the lookout for travel bargains.  This can prove more of a challenge in the big cities of the United States, but Intrepid’s Claire Baxter comes to the rescue in Los Angeles with a low-budget tip on how to see a different side of town…

“On a recent trip I decided to take advantage of the free transport provided by my airport hotel and head down to Manhattan Beach.  Although I was there in December, it was still really warm and perfect weather for a stroll and an ice cream.

There are walking and cycling paths that connect the beaches along the coast of Los Angeles and my aim was to walk all the way to Santa Monica. Although I didn’t make it quite that far, it was still a really pleasant walk.

To my surprise it looked exactly as the LA beaches do on TV shows like ‘Baywatch’ and ’90210′ with the lifeguard tower, little yellow truck and volleyball nets up and down the beach.  There were also plenty of people out and about cycling, walking with friends, walking their dogs and even rollerblading.

Although seeing Hollywood, Rodeo Drive, and all the other hot spots was fun, it was really nice to be able to spend a day away from the glitzy, touristy areas of Los Angeles and instead mix it with the locals going about their normal, everyday activities on the beach!”
