Few people know more about travelling with a camera than professional travel photographer and writer Steve Davey. His best-selling works include Unforgettable Places to See Before You Die and Unforgettable Islands to Escape To Before You Die and he also runs Intrepid photography trips, so who better to give us tips on how we can capture great travel portraits…
“If every picture tells a story, then with a little bit of thought, you can make sure that your pictures tell a story about the person in your pictures. Close up, frame-filling portraits are fantastic, but sometimes you want a portrait that shows more about someone than what their face looks like.

Being invited to partake in a local celebration is always a wonderful privilege, but as Intrepid’s Boris Golodets and his group discovered, getting to eavesdrop on a Russian wedding is almost as much fun…
“Not far from the Sadko Hotel, a hotel where Intrepid stays in Velikiy Novgorod, there is a cafe called Berg’s House. It is a quite new place but already has a good reputation and there are not many cafes to choose from in Velikiy Novgorod, so I was happy to take one of my groups there recently.

It’s believed that food and drink sustain the body and the spirit, and as Susan Everett discovered, dining with local friends in Turkey is a real travel treat…
“On the Cairo to Istanbul trip a personal highlight was the homestay in a small village outside of Urfa. The whole evening was amazing. So as not to offend our kind hosts the men in our group wore their long trousers and for most of us women our sarongs came in handy as ankle-length skirts. We sat on cushions on the floor while the children finished their homework and their parents prepared a meal that smelled more enticing by the minute.

Lush green rainforest, white-sand beaches, an abundance of wildlife and chocolate growing on trees! Maria Hach discovered that it doesn’t get much sweeter than Costa Rica!…
“Monteverde Cloud Biological Reserve is the closest to heaven that I have ever been. The fog, climate and altitude made the experience of hiking in an area immersed in cloud extraordinarily surreal. Our guide was a native Costa Rican and trained naturalist. As I followed him around the forest, walking on barely discernable trails, I listened intently to him talk about the history and character of the reserve.

Intrepid’s Christian Schoberl is a self-confessed sugar addict and chocoholic. He’s the one to ask about all sorts of sweet treats in Europe, so it was no surprise to find him on a pfannkuchen pilgrimage from Berlin to Venice…
“It was day-one of our trip and already I was eager to try some of the local treats. I went into a bakery and ordered a krapfen. The helpful salesgirl explained that in Berlin they are called pfannkuchen – a pancake. It looks like a donut without a hole and is stuffed with chocolate, vanilla custard or jam. Except beware around carnival time, when some cheeky clowns fill them with mustard or horseradish!
