going independent, on tour in cuba

intrepidexpress | top spot to visit | Friday, 27 July 2012

baracoa cuba by iain malloryIan Mallory, a.k.a. @MalloryOnTravel, has just returned from his first Intrepid trip. So how did he cope with being cooped up on a group tour?…

“Taking a tour of Cuba with Intrepid Travel was an eagerly awaited prospect as it was to be a completely different experience. To date almost all of my travels have been arranged independently with a sprinkling of package holidays just to keep more cautious friends happy. As specialists in small group tours, providing a bespoke, comprehensive service that includes arranging as much as individual travellers require, it seemed a good compromise.

wake up call in indonesia

intrepidexpress | top spot to visit | Thursday, 19 July 2012

mt batur bali indonesiaIt might seem crazy to attempt a mountain climb at night, but Jess Klaebe, from My Adventure Store in Brisbane, Australia, has set her sights on this for a long time and couldn’t wait to experience the unusual pre-dawn trek in Indonesia

“It’s dark outside, the air is hot and steamy. It’s 2:30am and my group is waiting for our transfer to Gunung Batur – one of the many active volcanoes in Indonesia. Our first stop is a little house in a local village where coffee, tea and banana pancakes are served. The perfect kick-start snack to wake you up and get you ready. Then the trek begins. In pitch black, and merely by the light of our head torches, we start walking.

eliza at rio carnaval brazilHave you ever experienced a visual overload? Something so different to anything else you’ve ever seen (or heard for that matter) that five years on you’re still unable to believe you were there? That was Rio Carnival for Intrepid’s Eliza Anderson…

“It was a sight so out of this world that I’m still getting flashes of the colour and vibrancy of the most amazing four hours of my life. Flashbacks of the fireworks exploding from the back of our float and wow, I’d almost forgotten about the transvestite ballerinas! For anyone who travels to Rio during Carnival I can promise you that the experience will be unforgettable.

My experience was somewhat unique, in that I really shook my tail feather, literally, on a float!

a top trip: timor-leste

intrepidexpress | top spot to visit | Wednesday, 27 June 2012

timor festivalMore than 100 Intrepid travellers have been quick to join the special club of early visitors to the young nation of Timor-Leste. Act fast and you too could enjoy the unique experience on our trip departing 15 July, 2012, when we have a handful of discounted places available. This is a wonderful time of year to go – the rains have mostly cleared but the hills are still green and spectacular, making every bend in the road open out to a magnificent vista.

Jane Crouch was Intrepid’s first group leader in Timor-Leste and she now has a longstanding and close association with this remarkable country. Jane recently caught up with our latest group and discovered that this new nation continues to captivate and charm its visitors…

saturday night strut in new york

intrepidexpress | top spot to visit | Thursday, 14 June 2012

time square at night new york city united statesEver been star-struck by a city? When Sarah Plaskitt touched down in one of the USA’s most famous megacities all those memorable movie moments came flooding back and this was her chance to strut in the shoes of her on-screen idols…

“I have never been more thrilled than the second I stepped out of the airport and hopped into a yellow cab headed for the bright lights of New York City. As I spoke the words “corner of 38th and Park please” I felt like I was in a scene from one of thousands of movies shot in the most effervescent and exciting city in the world. Just spotting the familiar street signs and sites seen hundreds of times before, I couldn’t believe I was truly there; 42nd Street, Grand Central Station, Rockerfeller Centre and Central Park.

rocking australia’s red centre

intrepidexpress | top spot to visit | Wednesday, 06 June 2012

uluru sunset central australiaTravelling in Australia’s Red Centre you’ll quickly discover why this region is unique. Within 24 hours that famous massive monolith and the Indigenous people who have been the local custodians for around 40,000 years left a lasting impression on Intrepid’s Chimene Barrett…

“Travelling down the highway we spot a massive rock formation, orange and dominating. We’re sure it must be Uluru, but our local leader lets us know it’s Mt Connor. A beautiful sight in itself, but you can see where it gets the nickname Fooluru. My first day out of Alice Springs and my shoes are already covered in red dust. I am so excited to finally get to walk around the base of Uluru!

inspired by zanzibar

intrepidexpress | top spot to visit | Wednesday, 06 June 2012

sunset sailing zanzibarWarm and inviting, the wonderful islands of Zanzibar are floating in the Indian Ocean, just off the coast of Tanzania. With a colourful history and incredible underwater world, Sally MacFarlane discovered that adding a Short Break in this sensational archipelago was a perfect way to spice up her African adventures…

“One of my sweetest travelling moments ever was jumping off a wooden boat into the crystal clear waters off the coast off Zanzibar. Not only did it feel fantastic after a hot and dusty (but awesome) 6-week overland safari with Intrepid through southern and eastern Africa, but it felt like taking a peek into an incredibly special world.

a top trip: secrets of angkor

intrepidexpress | top spot to visit | Wednesday, 06 June 2012

angkor wat cambodiaSometimes we have the luxury of planning months in advance and being away for weeks, but then there are times when we suddenly have a few days off work and don’t want to waste them. Dr Peter Bryar found himself in the latter situation, and it wasn’t long before he was headed to Cambodia

“Last year I had a week to spare and didn’t know what to do. I visited Intrepid Travel in Melbourne and within a half hour was booked to travel to Siem Reap (and the incredible Angkor Wat) through a 3-day Short Break Adventure. My head was spinning the whole time because there was so much to see and experience.

curious appeal of antarctica

penguins antarcticaAlways wondered it’s really like in Antarctica? It’s wild and windswept, but far from being a wasteland. It is a destination for the most intrepid of souls and Vicky Marin rates it as one of her most amazing adventures…

“Antarctica to me was always a dream destination and I finally had a chance to see the dream up close and personal. One of my favourite memories was when we visited a rookery of Gentoo penguins. This particular breed of penguin is quite sociable. One curious bird approached me and nibbled at my boots and pants. I smiled and snapped a few close-ups of my new friend.
