We ♥ responsible travel

intrepidexpress | about Intrepid,responsible travel | Thursday, 14 February 2013

left my heart in San Francisco United StatesAt Intrepid, we ♥ travel. Especially RESPONSIBLE travel. And it seems we’re not the only ones! Those of you who recently completed our Responsible Travel and Sustainability survey noted that Intrepid’s approach to Responsible Travel is one of the top 3 reasons you travel with us. The survey also showed that over 90% of respondents want to travel with a company who practice Responsible Travel and agree the travel industry has a duty to reduce its environmental footprint.

Take climate change for example. The tourism industry is both impacted by climate change and is a sector that’s a growing contributor to the problem. So as a travel company that creates and promotes holidays, we see it as our responsibility to be part of the solution, not the problem. And the good news is we’re not alone – 98% of survey respondents believe climate change is an important issue that Intrepid should continue to tackle.

Get creative with your camera

intrepidexpress | about Intrepid | Thursday, 31 January 2013

Majorelle gardens Marrakech MoroccoWorld-renowned travel photographer and author Steve Davey knows better than anyone, that when it comes to photography, there are no limits to your creativity. With camera in hand he loves pushing the boundaries to see what can be achieved, but in this article he talks about setting yourself guidelines to enjoy a whole new perspective on your adventures…

“Sometimes it can be good to set yourself projects on your travels. It will help to keep your pictures fresh, give you some motivation to search out pictures and will also give you a theme to show your pictures afterwards. Themes can work well whether you are creating a gallery of online images, or even creating a print-on-demand photo-book on a service like Blurb.

Take the Ultimate Train Challenge

intrepidexpress | about Intrepid | Monday, 14 January 2013

ultimate train challengeThe Ultimate Train Challenge was a concept that Michael Hodson came up while traveling in South America in 2010. He had recently finished a 16-month travel challenge to circle the globe without flying and his mind wandered to the question: “What is the world record for the longest continuous train journey?”

So it began…

In September of 2011, Michael set out with two travel-blogging friends to answer that question. The challenge: Lisbon to Saigon in 30 days – all on trains, of course. From the edge of Europe to the edge of Asia. The furthest you can go entirely by rail.

Singing friends in India

intrepidexpress | about Intrepid | Wednesday, 02 January 2013

Making friends in IndiaIntrepid Express reader Alice Hancock found a universal language in India

“We had built houses together all week, sharing little more than a few nods and hand gestures. Then, on day five, we took turns singing our favorite songs while we worked, their lyrics in Tamil and ours in English. Neither of us understood a word of what the other was singing, but it didn’t stop us from dancing and laughing as though we’d known each other for years. I still don’t know what the residents of that small village in southern India were singing, but I remember them all as my friends.”

Fire and Iceland

intrepidexpress | about Intrepid | Wednesday, 02 January 2013

Waterfalls in IcelandAnna Harvie discovered that there’s a lot more to Iceland than fire and ice, no matter what time of year you travel…

“Iceland is not only closer than you think, but far different than you ever imagined. Iceland is an independent democratic republic with a short but colorful history, with its own language and rich cultural heritage, especially in literature. With absolutely unique nature, this is a land of ice and fire with active volcanoes, spouting geysers, extensive lava fields and deserts, waterfalls, mountains and more. Around every corner there is something new and interesting.

Every part of the year has its own special attractions, character and charm. And do not let the name deceive you – Iceland can be very warm in summer when the sun shines virtually round the clock. Much of Iceland is still taking shape before your very eyes – raw, dramatic landscapes born from volcanic eruptions and carved out by glaciers. Other parts have hardly changed since the first Viking settlers saw them more than 1,100 years ago. You’ll experience wilderness and wildlife, energy and total calm, within easy reach wherever you stay, even on day trips.

“I am going to help save the world”

intrepidexpress | about Intrepid,people power | Tuesday, 01 January 2013

cycling in Hoi An VietnamRecently Darrell Wade, Intrepid co-founder, has been discussing on this blog the dire situation surrounding climate change and what Intrepid Travel has been doing to meet our corporate responsibilities. But now Darrell’s challenge to all of us is to find ways to make a personal commitment to change…

“Say this out loud: I am going to help save the world. Sounds good don’t you think? Now say it again, louder this time: I am going to help save the world!”

Why not join me and make this your new year’s resolution? I promise you it will feel even better than it sounds. But of course a new year’s resolution is only as good as the actions that happen as a result of the resolution. So as a part of your resolutions you’ll need to draw up a commitment list that really will help to save the world.
