Itinerary

The hustle and bustle of Shanghai can be overwhelming, so settle in with a walking tour around the smaller Zhouzhuang, one of the most famous water towns in China, which is just a train ride away. Jump in a gondola and cruise through this quaint town, a true ‘Venice of China’ experience. Back in Shanghai, explore the modern side of China, venturing to contemporary shopping quarters and fashionable restaurants.
Travel to Chengdu and delve into Sichuan cuisine with a spicy hot pot, plate of dragon prawns or bang bang chicken. In spare time, perhaps check out a traditional opera performance or head to one of the restaurants in Wenshu Temple for some delicious vegetarian dishes.
Witness the humbling work conservationists are doing to protect the symbol of China at the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base. Then hit the Yangzi and spend a few dreamy days drifting downriver in a tourist class boat to Yichang, cruising past the Three Gorges en route. Pumping culture, economic stability and culture through every tributary, this river network is the veins and lifeblood of China.
It’s thought that 700,000 labourers and slaves worked on the construction of the Terracotta Warriors in the third century BC; today it’s one of the most famous sights in China. Be sure to visit this elaborate archeological find, as well as the many cultural sites and modern attractions this fascinating city has on offer.
The hot spot of China, both modern and ancient, Beijing is forever reinventing itself. Head to the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven Park and Summer Palace. Then make tracks to the number one iconic sight in China: the Great Wall. Stretching for more than 3,400 km, this wonder is best explored on foot. Return to Beijing to sample some of the country’s best food, including Peking duck, dim sum, spicy noodle soup and perhaps some deep-fried ice cream.
