This is one of Asia's finest geological wonders and hiking high above the Yangzi River is the best way to experience it. A laidback city to visit, Kunming is the capital of Yunnan Province and is known as 'the city of eternal spring' due to its temperate climate.
Days 2-3 Dali
Dali has a relaxed atmosphere that is enhanced by its spectacular surroundings - snow-capped mountains on one side and the vast Erhai Lake on the other.
Days 4-5 Shaxi
A charming historical market town, Shaxi retains its old-world feel and has none of the mass-tourist feel that plagues many other places in China.
Days 6-7 Shangri-La
Renamed Shangri-La to promote tourism, Zhongdian is a lovely town with rugged scenery and a strong Tibetan culture evident.
Days 8-9 Tiger Leaping Gorge
Sixteen kilometres long and rising up to 3,900 m above the waters of the Yangzi River, Tiger Leaping Gorge is one of the deepest gorges in the world.
Days 10-11 Lijiang
Set among stunning mountain scenery, World Heritage-listed Lijiang is home to old-world China and the local Naxi people - a matrilineal society descended from Tibetan nomads.
Days 12-13 Kunming
Although Kunming is a large city, a relaxed vibe still exists and there is plenty of culture and traditional sites to be found among the increasingly modern landscape.
