South China Getaway SummaryAdd to Shortlist
Kick off the journey in China’s most dynamic city. Visit the Yuyuan Gardens or stop by the Shanghai Museum to better understand China’s intriguing history. Sip on a hot brew and experience China’s tea culture at a traditional teahouse, take a boat ride along the river and marvel at Shanghai’s impressive skyline.
Head to a tulou village, where their round dwellings are made from a mixture of earth, sand, lime rice, bamboo and wood chips, which are packed into walls up to 2 metres thick. Take a tour around the small community, meet the locals and hear their stories.
Take a stroll along Yundang Lake, through Music Square and past countless gardens before dining on Xiamen’s regional delights. Later, check out the bubbling night market or enjoy an open-air barbecue and beer night in the university quarter.
In the home of some of China’s most epic landscapes, take a rive cruise, jump on a bike and pedal through the rice fields or simply stroll along the river and become immersed in the natural beauty of the valley. For the more adventurous, go caving in the limestone hills or kit up in a rock-climbing harness and tackle one of the 300 rock-climbing routes.
Hike along the Longji rice terraces, also known as the ‘Dragon’s Backbone’. Like an undulating dragon’s tail, the terraces make fascinating patterns following the contours of the steep hillside. There may also be an opportunity to jump in a hot spring to rest aching bones. Otherwise just indulge in the blockbuster scenery and appreciate the natural splendour of the landscape.
Back in the bustle of a big city, jump aboard a ferry to see Hong Kong’s skyline from the water, enjoy the bright spectacle of the nightly light show or escape the busy city centre and wander through Hong Kong Park. Be sure to stop at a bakery to pick up an egg bun, visit a yum cha house for some perfect dumplings or hit up a street vendor for a stick of fish balls – Hong Kong's food is fast, fresh and full of flavour. Then it's time to say farewell to China's south and this enlightening journey.

As the second half of an extended tour, it had much to live up to, which it did. Simply amazing!

Great tour. Really enjoyed ourselves and got to see parts of China we wouldn't have chosen if we were traveling by ourselves.
