Starting in eclectic Kathmandu, enjoy a visual extravaganza of some of the most mind-blowing scenery on the planet while journeying along the Friendship Highway. Head through remote wildernesses, view jaw-dropping gorges, gaze up at rugged, snow-dusted mountains, cross the lunar-like landscape of the Tibetan Plateau and admire stunning blue lakes. Get spiritual at Rongphu Monastery, Tashilhunpo Monastery, Potala Palace and Wutai Shan; chat to yak herders in isolated settlements; head underground to sleep in a cave house; view the Yanguang Grottoes; learn about China's imperial past; and stare at the Terracotta Warriors in Xi'an before ending the trip in Beijing.

Day 1 Kathmandu

Arrive in quirky Kathmandu, an eclectic mix of ancient culture and modernity.

Days 2-3 Kodari

Travel to Kodari, an adventure lover’s haven. Grab a mountain bike, take a ropes course or experience a thrilling bungee jump.

Day 4 Zhangmuzhen

Cross the friendship bridge into Tibet and explore the hillside town of Zhangmuzhen.

Days 5-7 Friendship Highway

Cut across gorges, plateaux and mountain passes on this famous road.

Day 8 Baipa/New Tingri

Stay overnight in a local guesthouse at the junction of the road to Everest Base Camp, and acclimatise to the heights of the Himalayas.

Day 9 Rongbuk

Visit Rongbuk monastery and climb to Everest Base Camp.

Day 10 Baipa/New Tingri

Spend some more time at Base Camp before returning to Baipa.

Day 11 Shigatse

Traverse high mountain passes on the road to Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city and home of the world's largest gilded statue.

Day 12 Gyantse

Check out the Tashilhunpo Monastery before heading to the rural town of Gyantse.

Day 13 Yamdrok Tso Lake

Learn about Tibetan Buddhism at the archetypical Pelkor Chode before camping near the banks of the Yamdrok Tso Lake.

Days 14-17 Lhasa

Travel to Tibet’s beautiful city of Lhasa. Learn about its mysterious past and observe its modern future.

Day 18 Bush Camp

Cross the Tibetan Plateau and camp near the famous Tanggula Pass.

Day 19 Golmud

Cross into the Chinese town of Golmud for some spectacular views.

Days 20-21

Climb overland through Qinghai, passing the beautiful Qianghai Hu Lake.

Day 22 Lanzhou

Explore the friendly town of Lanzhou.

Days 23-24 Xiahe

Visit one of China’s most enchanting towns. Many Tibetans make the pilgrimage to Xiahe, laying prayer flags along the way.

Days 24-25 Bingling Si/Lanzhou

Explore the impressive caves and intricately detailed Buddhist carvings at Bingling Si.

Days 27-28 Pingliang

Travel to the town of Pingliang, nestled at the foot of the temple-studded Kongtong Mountain.

Days 29-32 Xi'an

Admire the 2,000-year-old army of Terracotta Warriors and explore significant cultural sites and museums while in Xi'an.

Days 33-34 Yan'An

Yan'An was where Mao's Long March ended in 1935, and was the Communist Party's base until 1948 - it's also filled with cultural sites and nature to enjoy.

Day 35 Lijiashan

With cave dwellings adorning the hills around Lijiashan, this fascinating town is a definite highlight of any trip to China.

Days 36-37 Pingyao

Walking through the beautifully preserved streets of Pingyao is like stepping back into Imperial China with red lanterns lighting streets, imposing city walls and traditional buildings at every turn.

Days 38-39 Wutai Shan

Wutai Shan is also called 'Five Plateau Mountain', and is home to the Bodhisattva of wisdom and harbours some of China's most sacred monasteries and temples.

Days 40-41 Datong

Bordering Inner Mongolia, Datong is a coal rich city that founded in 200BC and is the gateway to the incredible Yungang Grottoes and Hanging Monastery.

Day 42 Jinshanling

Jinshanling is a mountainous area with an attractive section of the Great Wall, which zigzags up the steep terrain and straddles peaks like a suspension bridge.

Days 43-44 Chengde

Sitting pretty in the mountains, Chengde is a breath of fresh air, especially the enchanting Mountain Resort which is a former royal summer residence.

Days 45-47 Beijing

Beijing has a long and colourful history and this rapidly modernising city is an amazing whirl of ancient sites, modern buildings, bicycles, people, shops and eateries.
